"I'm a survivor. No matter what the cost."
―Phasma, to TN-3465[7]

Phasma was a human female who served as a captain in the First Order during the New Republic Era and the early stages of the First Order's war with the Resistance. Born on the Unknown Regions planet Parnassos in 6 ABY to a small and weak family, Phasma and her older brother Keldo grew up having to defend the family and their ancestral home, the Nautilus, from rival clans. Around 19 ABY, Phasma conspired with one of the families rivals, the Scyre, to have her family killed, while ensuring she and her brother could continue living in their home. Now members of the Scyre, the siblings eventually rose to take leadership of the clan.

Behind the scenes

"We know very little about her at this stage, but what I think people are drawn to is that this is a very progressive female character. We see Captain Phasma, and we see the costume from head to toe, and we know that it is a woman. But we are used to, in our media, connecting to female characters via the way that they look, from the way they are made flesh."
―Gwendoline Christie[8]
"We are actually connecting to a female character as a human being."
―Gwendoline Christie[8]
"It wasn't just about what I was expressing above the neck, it was also as focused on what I was expressing below the neck. It was an interesting acting experience as well as a fangirl's dream."
―Gwendoline Christie[8]
"She's Star Wars' first female villain. It's incredible, it's timely, and I'm very proud to be a part of it."
―Gwendoline Christie[8]
"Everything was happening simultaneously. When the idea came up to make Phasma female, it was instantaneous: Everyone just said, 'Yes. That's great.'"
Lawrence Kasdan[9]

Phasma was created for the 2015 sequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens.[10] She first appeared in the mobile game Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes, which updated December 17, 2015 to include her and other characters inspired from The Force Awakens,[11] which premiered the following day.[12] Gwendoline Christie portrayed the captain in the film.[6]

Phasma was first revealed, albeit unidentified, in the second trailer for The Force Awakens,[13] which was first shown at Celebration Anaheim on April 16, 2015,[14] and later posted on the Star Wars YouTube channenl.[13] The character's name and portayal by Christie was revealed by Vanity Fair in an article, posted May 4, 2015.[15]

Phasma's design began as a concept for Kylo Ren by Michael Kaplan(verify right Kaplan) that was rejected by J.J. Abrams, since Ren did not lead the stormtroopers as one of them. The design remained hanging in the design room until Kathleen Kennedy saw it and insisted it make it into the movie which prompted Abrams to create Phasma. The costume team only had four to five days to create the character.[10]

In Imanuel Doza's Databank entry, the alt attribute for an image incorrectly identifies Commander Pyre as Phasma.[16]
