Description

Design

The Kuari Princess was an MC80 luxury starliner[1] one of several built by the Mon Calamari Shipyards for Galaxy Tours under a special dispensation from Imperial Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin due to his appreciation of the aesthetics of Mon Calamari design. However, despite Tarkin's gesture, the Mon Calamari starshipwrights did not forget that the Empire had subjugated their homeworld of Dac. Every component developed for one of the new luxury starliners was created as a prototype for future warship production. The sporting lasers designed for the Kuari Princess were the testbeds for pinpoint targeting computers. So successful was the design of the Kuari Princess that it was the basis for eight heavy cruisers by the time of the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY,[7] and was considered to be one of the Mon Calamari's finest creations.[4]

Designated as an M-Class luxury liner,[3] the Kuari Princess was five hundred meters in length,[4] split over ten decks.[5] Organic-looking like all Mon Calamari-built ships, the Kuari Princess featured a bulbous main section containing the internal decks, and two wings, one on each side.[4] The vessel had space to accommodate 3,500 passengers at a time, and had provisions for providing support facilities for twenty-seven different alien species.[3] The ship was armed with ten turbolaser batteries for defense, and was equipped with deflector shields. The Kuari Princess could store 5,000 metric tons of cargo, and carried consumables to last for a standard year.[4]

Deck layout and facilities

The bridge was located at the very top of the ship, with the three decks directly beneath designated as Storage Deck 1, Storage Deck 2, and Storage Deck 3.[5] a ventilation shaft connected the bridge to the Engineering Deck, with the entrance located in the atmospheric exchange chamber. The shaft was infested by Vervikks, who were known to attack sentients when hungry. Twelve banks of three turbolifts apiece served the majority of decks, except for the Engineering Deck which only featured six banks. Viewvids were present throughout the majority of the ship, which allowed passengers to access the ship's databanks, or view the public areas of the vessel.[4] A deluxe Royal Suite was also available aboard.[3]

Bazaar Deck

The Bazaar Deck was located directly beneath Storage Deck 3. At the prow was located a swimming pool with dedicated male and female bathrooms.[5] The Estuan Theater, named for the famed Dactrurian actor, Anorad Estuan,[4] dominated the front quarter of the deck.[5] With a seating capacity of nine hundred, the Theater was equipped to accommodate both live and holographic performances. Each seat was fitted with D-baffling to eliminate ambient noise from other members of the audience.[4] Forty staterooms flanked the Theater on either side, for a total of eighty, running along the port and starboard interior of the ship's hull. These staterooms served as the housing for the many merchants who traveled aboard the Kuari Princess,[5] many of whom operated shops and services on the Bazaar Deck.[4] The second quarter of the Bazaar Deck was dominated by the Open Market,[5] also known as the InterWorld Marketplace[3] a bazaar made up of various stands, tents and booths. Most common items could be found for sale at one of the stalls in the Open Market, sold by one of many alien traders. Some illegal trading was known to occur in the Open Market, with prices for such items starting at more than fifty percent higher than the standard asking price. A group of Jawas from Tatooine ran a Droid Shop in the Open Market, while an elderly female named Vern operated a gift shop known as Kuari Souvenirs. A Weapons Shop staffed by two lizard-like aliens specialized in space-skeet blasters, although they had a stock of military grade weapons retailing for one hundred and fifty percent of their market value.[4] On either side of the Open Market was a Shopping Arcade;[5] the Port Shopping Arcade consisted of eight shops dedicated to clothing, including a humanoid formal attire store run by N'Vadin. The Starboard Shopping Arcade consisted of six shops and a secure storage area. These stores catered to those seeking expensive accessories and jewellery.[4] Banks of escape pods bracketed the Open Market.[5]

Much of the third quarter of the Bazaar Deck was dominated by both standard and deluxe staterooms.[5] The standard staterooms measured four meters by six, and were designed to be occupied by two individuals. Each stateroom had access to a private bathroom, and was environmentally sealed in case of emergency, or to duplicate an atmosphere comfortable for some alien species. Standard staterooms cost between fifty and one hundred and fifty credits per day depending on which deck they were located on, and were magno locked, requiring a key for entry.[4] Two hundred and eight standard staterooms were located on the Bazaar Deck, along with sixty four deluxe.[5] Deluxe staterooms were eight meters square, and were equipped with an EM entertainment module, refreshment centre and master bath. Like standard staterooms, the environment could be tailored to suit the occupant. Deluxe staterooms were charged at a rate of 250 to 450 credits a day depending on deck location, and a domo droid was available to cater private functions are no extra charge.[4] Along the port side of the Bazaar Deck[5] were located several Meditation Chambers available to those who had made arrangements prior to embarking; individual meditation was catered for, as was species-specific spiritual services.[4] Further down[5] was a variety of speciality restaurants, including Sporofor Spetzna for those species who could ingest cellulose; the Calamari Cafe which specialized in Mon Calamari cuisine; Unduine's, noted for its ribs from the animals of sixteen different systems; and the Aft Deck Diner, which served cheap fare from a dozen worlds, with a speciality in Rodian cooking.[4] Located on the starboard side[5] was the Nurse's Station, run by the Aqualish Head Nurse Calfta Bongi. Facilities for children were also present; infants were welcomed in the Creche, while the Sub-Adult Center was reserved for adolescents. Both were run by a combination of droids and Ubasameirs, a species with an natural and instinctive affinity for children . The Rolo Room—a contraction of the term "Real Time Holo"—featured interactive holographic adventures which were changed on a daily basis and were exclusively available only to children. Finally, The Imperial, an elite restaurant,[4] was located on the starboard side.[5] Modelled to resembled the audience chamber in Imperial City, it served lavish and expensive meals, including the specialities, Bivoli Tempari and Lobster Bisellian. The average meal for two cost two hundred credits.[4]

The aft quarter of the deck[5] was the location of the two suites, the Emperor's Suite and the Kuari Suite. Costing 1,000 credits a day, they were finest accommodations aboard the Kuari Princess. They boasted a deluxe refreshment center, split-level entertainment room, holo-overlay projector with sensory adapter, a vintage stock of Pludris, an original Xephi Sep kinesculpture, an organic butler, zero-g sauna, and private computer console.[4] The Emperor was located on the port, while the Kuari occupied the starboard. Between the two suites[5] were the Gild-Galaxy Shops, which sold everything that the Shopping Arcades and Open Market in the fore part did, but they were better quality and were sold at a higher price.[4] The Fountain of Light was located behind the shops. On the port side, next to the Emperor's Suite, was the Scorp Club,[5] an exclusive establishment only open to members. It included a private galley and a card room. Suite residents gained automatic membership for the duration of their stay aboard the Kuari Princess, while deluxe stateroom guests could join for twenty-five credits a day. Other patrons were charged one hundred and twenty five a day.[4] Located next to the Kuari Suite was a lounge, and Pendlestat,[5] a business which hired out professions and experts in most fields for training purposes. Some experts were droids, while others were individuals trading their services for passage.[4] At the very rear of the deck was located the Emergency Bridge,[5] from which the crew could take control of the vessel in a crisis.[4] It was flanked by Crew Apartments on either side[5] which consisted of eight one-person cubicles arranged dormitory-style, comprised of G-bunks and storage lockers. A lavatory served each Apartment.[4]

Recreation Deck

One level down was the Recreation Deck,[5] which featured fifteen gymnasiums with variable gravity control. Three quarters of the equipment was designed to be usable by humanoids, and the remaining quarter for use by those were unique physiologies.[4] Six gymnasiums were located at the fore of the deck, three amidships, and six at the aft. Zero-g saunas were located near the gymnasiums; two at the fore, one amidships, and two at the aft.[5] The saunas provided a temperature range of five hundred degrees.[4] The majority of the port side of the Recreation Deck was dominated by[5] the full size 20-port[3] slafcourse where participants rode plastic sleds through an impellor field course. Points were scored for the time taken to complete the course, and how many "ports" they successfully navigated through during their run.[4] Various amenities relating to slaffing were also available on the port side, including sled racks and an area to obtain proper slaf clothing and accessories. Swimwear and accessories were also available on the port side, along with Chi Wave Training, and Competition Droid Rental.[5]

The second quarter of the deck was the location of two casinos,[5] the Matine Casino and the Casino Kuari. The Matine was considered the less expensive of the two, with table betting between two and five hundred credits, and offered games of chance including magna-shuffle, Imperial Commander, Zinbiddle, and Dejarik. Sabacc, Tregald, Lugjack, Binspo and Compmatch were available at the Kuari, with bets in the range of twenty five to a thousand credits. The Environment Room, which recreated exotic locales in exact detail,[4] was also located by the casinos.[5] The room featured holo-augmentation, although flora and fauna were either imported or recreated.[4] Two hundred and sixteen standard staterooms and forty-six deluxe staterooms were located through the fore and mid part of the deck. The starboard side of the deck was the home of the space skeets,[5] with each booth having an independent environmental membrane and miniature turbolaser with a comlink to a droid-controlled skeet release.[4] Directly amidships was the Ballroom Projectors,[5] which gave the crew access to the holoprojectors and beta-mixers for the Grand Ballroom on the deck below.[4] Three swimming pools and the attendant locker facilities[5]—featured clenswash tanks, showers, massage tables, and lavatories[4]—were located behind the projector room, as was the Secondary Dining Room on the starboard side. The ship's Infirmary was located on the port side,[5] run by the Ithorian Doctor Momaw Mowadan.[4] Forty-five zero-gravity[3] Wallball Courts were located on the starboard side,[5] where waits of up to a hour for a court were not uncommon due to the popularity of the sport,[4] while the Wallball Pro Shop, stocked with the latest equipment and accessories for the serious and professional wallballers, was directly opposite on the port. The entirety of the aft quarter was given over to escape pods. Finally, the entire deck, with the exception of the area of the staboard side given over to where the space skeets were located, was ringed by the Motility Track,[5] which featured six exercise lanes with standard ranges of gravities. Three tracks served each direction, and a lap was 2,000 meters including the turning circles.[4]

Lido Deck

The fore section of the Lido Deck was reserved for standard staterooms, with one hundred and sixty four present.[5] Six specially designed circular staterooms were reserved for the use of species with a poisonous or toxic atmosphere.[4] Directly aft of the staterooms were the main swimming pools; one standard and[5] a competition sized[3] NH3/Hg solution. Most bathers in the latter pool required sealed suits to avoid poisoning, which were available for rent at the cost of three credits an hour.[4] Amidships featured two dining establishments;[5] the Grand Dining Room, which required formal wear to enter and featured meals prepared by Head Chef Chirome, and The Bistro, which was more relaxed and offered simpler food.[4] The middle of the deck was dominated by the Grand Ballroom,[5] which boasted a Mayuril dance floor, holo-environment overlays and beta-mixers. A large stage was installed that could seat the entire thirty-five member ship's orchestra, and a special gala ball was held on the first night when new passengers embarked.[4] The ship's Library was located on the port side. The third quarter of the deck was dominated by Xerrol's Place,[5] a nightclub which was considered to be the place to socialize on the ship. A multi-piece house glizband, the Graf-Spanners, provided entertainment. Drinks at Xerrol's cost two credits for a single measure, or twenty-five for bottles of lum or Corellian whiskey. Runners were available to deliver drinks to patrons using the pools on the forward part of the deck, but the prices were doubled and the servers expected to be tipped.[4] Xerrol's was bracketed on either side by the deck's escape pods. The aft quarter included the Droid Lounge,[5] a nightclub exclusively for droids. The majority of the clientèle were droids brought aboard by the various passengers, although members of the Kuari Princess' droid pool often frequented the establishment, where lubricant and silicon chips were available for three credits apiece.[4] It was also the location of the Repair Shop[5] where most technological repairs could be made with prices costing about twenty percent of the items value.[4] Shipboard security's main offices were located on the aft section,[5] which also contained the Security Chief's office, detention cells and safecubes for passenger's valuables and checked weapons.[4] A Crew Lounge was next to Security[5] to cater to crew who require a break from the passengers. Emotion-splining software was made available to ease the psychological stresses the crew were under.[4] The rear of the deck was given over to an Observation Platform[5] with a huge transparisteel viewport offering views of space. Circular benches offered seating areas for passengers, and each bench had a small holo-game table in the center[4] that could play B'shingh.[6] Small refreshment kiosks were also available for passenger use.[4]

Credicruise Decks

The Homthor and Wellad Decks were located beneath the Lido Deck and were refered to as the "credicruise decks". They were laid out similarly to the Lido Deck, with each level featuring an observation port, escape pods, secondary dining room, galley and three small snack shops. All other amenities were replaced by staterooms, with each deck holding 448 standard and 86 deluxe for a total of 534 per level.[4]

Engineering Deck

The lowest deck on the ship, the Engineering Deck contained the majority of the Kuari Princess' vital systems. Passengers with an interest in technical and engineering matters were invited to tour the Engineering Deck.[4] The forward chamber was the Atmospheric Exchange,[5] which contained eight huge tanks that were full of various gaseous mixtures that were then pumped throughout the vessel[4] by Sondat Atmospheric Exchange Pumps.[5] Engineers working in the chamber were required to wear pressure suits and breathing masks due to the gases leaking into the chamber that caused light headedness.[4] The Csoli-Corli 5-Node Sensor was located in the chamber, at the nose of the prow.[5] Directly aft and on the port side were the Crew Mess and Crew Stowage.[5] The Mess was run by cooking droids and meals were prepared with cheap nutrition in mind rather than taste. The Stowage area was a locked room where the crew's valuables were stored.[4] Continuing aft and running along the port-side hull were five Staff Offices, and the Chief Engineer's Office. A series of lounges and conference rooms run parallel to the Staff Offices,[5] where the engineers and crew relaxed.[4] Five control cabins ran alongside the conference rooms;[5] Environmental Control monitored environmental conditions throughout the ship, except the engineering deck which was controlled locally. Individuals in the chamber could change the environment settings shipwide, or for individual decks, regions, or staterooms. Changes could be made to temperatures with ranges from minus 100 degrees to 100 degrees Standard, gravity variations from one-half to two standard, humidity, and the creation of an atmosphere from the gases in the atmospheric exchange chamber. Stateroom Monitors was equipped with life sensors, matter analyzers and energy receptors to monitor all staterooms and public areas in the interests of passenger safety. Nav Support provided navigational data information to the bridge and was full of grav-traps, Doppler compensators and back-up sensor controls. Power Control allowed access to the ship's power systems, and allowed individuals to reroute power to systems or to cut it off completely to certain sections. Communication Control was equipped with signal enhancers, decoders, echo-rectifiers and transceivers.[4] The Computer Core housed the Kuari Princess' computer databanks, and the Cyrogenic Reserve Cells were directly aft of the Chief Engineer's Office. The starboard side was dominated by the Kuari Princess's Hangar Bay. The vast area was the location of the ISBe 300 Hyperwave Transmitter Antenna, and included ancillary rooms dedicated to shuttle maintenance and parts storage.[5] Two Sienar Fleet Systems robot-piloted landing barges were berthed in the hangar, along with room for at least one more vessel. The automated shuttles ferried passengers to and from the Kuari Princess. Upon arrival, guests were required to queue at the check-in counter and present their ticket-chips to the hostess, who would then in turn assign them their stateroom and give them a passenger information datapacket containing reading material regarding the Kuari Princess itself, deck plans and emergency escape procedures.[4]

Amidships housed storage areas for both luxuries and perishables, along with the Local Environment Control which controlled the environment on the Engineering Deck and access to the blast doors throughout the deck. It was also the location of the DoubleSec Corporation Gravity Field Compensator, and the Gravitech M—Well Nav Detectors. A Mixed Sensor Array, combining Carbanti United Electronics, Fabritech, Mon Cal and Damio products, were mounted on both the port and starboard side of the ship. The Main Engine Chamber dominated the aft half of the ship, where the Kwenn-Class Hyperdrive was situated, surrounded by Kuat Drive Yards Class 2 radiation shielding. Linked to a Koensayr 4.2 VMT Power Converter and a Mon Cal SOSW Power Converter, the hyperdrive was rated as a Class 2 unit, with a back-up Class 8 for hyperspace travel. The engine chamber was also the location of four Por Forian H-Stable Power Cells, a Verdrellig AF Double Strobe Shield Generator, Nordoxicon Energy Storage Units, and the MCC 40Z Series sublight engines.[5] A single workshop served as the main hub for the Kuari Princess' engineering teams to perform maintenance and repairs, and contained full technical readouts and blueprints for the vessel.[4] Crew apartments for the engineers were scattered throughout the deck.[5]
