Christmas was an annual holiday celebrated by various sentients throughout the galaxy. In celebration of the holiday, sentients would often light Christmas trees and give gifts to each other. On Christmas morning, Santa Claus would travel around the entire galaxy to gift presents to children who he deemed "good." Eventually, Santa became unable to deliver all the presents alone, so he enlisted the help of his son S. Claus.[1]

Behind the scenes
Christmas first appeared in Christmas in the Stars,[1] a non-canon 1980 Christmas album produced by RSO Records that featured Star Wars–themed Christmas songs.[2] In the real world, Christmas is a religious holiday celebrated on December 25 to observe the birth of Jesus Christ, as well as a worldwide secular celebration.[3] Christmas in the Stars will occasionally mention real-world references and elements while set in an in-universe continuity.[1] This article assumes that those references are intended to be easter eggs for the viewer and are not actually contained within the story of the album.
Life Day and Christmas parallels
Released on November 17, 1978,[4] The Star Wars Holiday Special introduced the Star Wars holiday, Life Day.[5] Although originally intended to parallel the real-world holiday of Thanksgiving,[6] having released the Friday prior to the holiday,[4] over time the holiday special has instead become associated with Christmas and has even be referred to as the "Christmas special."[7] As such, multiple Star Wars properties have released in association to Life Day, that in actuality are related to the real-world traditions of Christmas. Games such as the 2003 Massively multiplayer online roleplaying game Star Wars Galaxies and the 2007 video game Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron released Life Day updates or events around or during Christmas.[8][9] Star Wars Galaxies in particular, introduced the concept of decorating wroshyr trees with lights, resembling the Christmas tradition of Christmas trees. The game also introduced parallels to Christmas carols,[10] wreaths, festive gift boxes, and much more.[11] During its in-game "Life Day" events between 2010 and 2013, the MMORPG Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures released a plethora of Christmas related items. During the "12 Days of Christmas" event in December 2011, the items were rereleased on sale.[12]
12 Days of Christmas
The items released during the "Life Day" and "12 Days of Christmas" event were all references to Christmas traditions or characters. During the latter event, a different item was released on sale every day for twelve days between December 13 and December 24 of 2012. The title of the event is itself a reference to the popular English Christmas carol "The Twelve Days of Christmas,"[12] in which the singer describes the gifts provided to them by their lover during the Twelve Days of Christmas.[13]

Other Christmas relations in video games
Star Wars Galaxies, Clone Wars Adventures, and the 2011 roleplaying game Star Wars: The Old Republic each contain references to popular Christmas stories and films. The Galaxies website contains an article in which Emperor Palpatine says the phrase "Bah, humbug!".[14] This is a reference to the character Ebenezer Scrooge from Charles Dickens' book A Christmas Carol, who popularly states the phrase to express his views on Christmas.[15]
The Imperial Edict GR-1NC4 as introduced in The Old Republic, was issued to stop personel of the Sith Empire from engaging in Life Day celebrations.[16] This is a reference to the pop culture character, the Grinch, from Dr. Seuss's How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, who originally had intentions of stopping the Christmas celebrations of The Whos of Whoville.[17] How the Grinch Stole Christmas! themselves were referenced in the Star Wars Galaxies Life Day 2009 Painting, which depicted a group of Wookiees holding hands around a decorated Life Day tree, with Sith Lord Darth Vader ominously looming in the background whilst crushing a present.[10] The painting closely resembles a scene from the 1966 television adaptation of How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, which shows the Whos of Whoville gathering around a Christmas tree in song. The Clone Wars Adventures video game contains a stage in the Republic Defender mini-game titled "Grievous Steals Life Day," serving as another reference to the Grinch. In the mini-game, all of the dialogue for Commander Cody and General Grievous was spoken in a poetic meter.[18]
