An untitled film about droids was planned by George Lucas to be released in the 1980s but was cancelled due to unknown reasons.
Plot summary
The film was to focus on the adventures of C-3PO and R2-D2.
Development
During the 1970s, when George Lucas envisioned the whole story of the Star Wars saga with four trilogies and twelve episodes, he conceived a Droids-centric film along an untitled film about Wookiees. The film was supposed to have the R2-D2 and C-3PO as the main protagonists after the enormous success of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.[1]
In 1980, Lucas told to the magazine Prevue that while he was writing A New Hope, he pitched the idea to make some, in his words, odd films aside the main saga films, which were going to be two at that time. As Lucas said, the film was going to be a film about robots with no humans in it.[2]
However, at the end, Lucas opted to continue the original trilogy and decided to work on Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back and released it in 1980. Although he said the same year that he had plans to make a Droids film, after 1981 he never spoke again of that subject, implying its cancellation.[2]
