A valuable[1] and ancient Jedi artifact[2] used as a map to Jedi sites[7] was once stored in the Jedi temple of the Moon of Staggec in the Outer Rim Territories. The temple was eventually left ruined and abandoned.[2] The artifact was then found during an archeological dig on the planet Bursant[3] in 22 BBY, during the early months of the the Clone Wars between the Galactic Republic and the Confederacy of Independent Systems.[8]
Jedi Master Mace Windu, who was visiting the site, sensed that an artifact very powerful with the Force was nearby.[3] Count Dooku, Head of State of the Confederacy and Sith apprentice to the Sith Lord Darth Sidious, lusted after the artifact to use against his Sith Master and hunted for it.[2] He attacked the dig site but was unable to retrieve the artifact and it was picked up by the Wookiee youngling Viiveenn[3] who later gave it to her father Yarua, who worked as a senator in the Galactic Senate of the Galactic Republic as the representative of[1] the Mid Rim planet[9] Kashyyyk.[1] Dooku dispatched General Grievous to acquire the artifact[2] from Yarua. Under the impression he was meeting with the Moon of Staggec delegation to negotiate their allegiance to the Republic, Yarua promised to give them the artifact, thereby giving it[1] to its previous home.[2] However, upon realizing that he had fallen into a Separatist trap, he hid the item inside a doll owned by his daughter and sent her to hid in a forest. Yarua later sacrificed himself to save his daughter from Separatist Grievous, and Yarua's allies in the Republic arranged for her to be returned to Kashyyyk. As only Viiveenn had known her father hid it, it was assumed lost by the Republic, although in fact it remained in the doll carried by Viiveenn.[1] Wishing to prove her worth to Count Dooku, Sith assassin Asajj Ventress sought to find the Jedi artifact. Through the Force, Ventress was drawn to the ruins on the Moon of Staggec and then to the Mid Rim world of Naboo, where she found both the artifact and the doll in the possession of a Gungan, who had found it. Ventress tried to steal it and threatened the individual's life before deciding to leave the items behind upon realizing Dooku did not value her life.[2] Viiveenn later managed to reclaim the doll but lost it again during an Attack on a Republic fleet.[5]
Later in the Clone Wars the doll was found by the shopkeeper Halorum[5] who kept the doll on her ship. During a mission to Bavana, Jedi Master Quinlan Vos sensed the doll's history and importance, but Halorum demanded that Vos leave the doll.[10] The artifact was only discovered again in 4 ABY after the Battle of Endor after a group of members of the Alliance to Restore the Republic found it inside the doll. Protocol droid C-3PO and Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker recognized it as a map to Jedi sites, and were encouraged by the opportunity to recover Jedi knowledge. Afterwards Leia Organa donated the doll to displaced children living in the Alliance Fleet.[7] The presence of the artifact was later sensed during the Rise of the First Order by dark side adapt and enforcer of the First Order Kylo Ren, after he found the doll on the planet Karaxis in possession of the family of Kelvin Mann, but he was unaware of the presence's source and as such left it behind.[11]
Behind the scenes
The item was created for the comic anthology series Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories and first appeared i its first issue, which was written by Amanda Deibert and illustrated by Lucas Marangon.[1] Prior to the comic's release on August 24, 2022,[12] the item was first mentioned on July 22 of that year in a blog post on StarWars.com covering a panel at Celebration Anaheim where the comic had been first revealed. The blog post had slightly different coloring, instead depicting the artifact as white.[13]
