"I know the stories. My grandfather worked at an Imperial factory. Put food on the table when he couldn't find work anywhere else. Did that make him evil?"

A weapons factory of the Galactic Empire operated during the Imperial Era and employed the eventual grandfather of the human mechanic Tamara Ryvora. In 34 ABY, Ryvora told the Resistance spy Kazuda Xiono and the mechanic Jarek Yeager about her grandfather's occupation and how it had kept her family fed.

A weapons factory[1] of the Galactic Empire operated during the Imperial Era.[2]

History

"You're just too young to understand, Tam. The Empire exploited the vulnerable that—"
"Oh, I understand. I understand that you're taking Kaz's side. Again."

During the Empire's reign, the grandfather of the human mechanic Tamara Ryvora searched for work and eventually began working for the factory to feed his family after being unable to find employment elsewhere.[2] At some point after he had stopped working there,[1] Ryvora was told of[2] her[3] grandfather's Imperial employment and how it had assisted her relatives,[2] though was not informed the factory had been involved with making weapons of war.[1]

While aboard the supertanker fuel depot Colossus[2] in 34 ABY,[4] Ryvora felt comforted by the protection offered by the First Order's stormtroopers, as the forces[2] of the Empire's successor state[5] reminded her of the way the Empire used to protect citizens[3] during her grandfather's past. She briefly talked about her grandfather's former employment with her colleagues, the Resistance spy Kazuda Xiono and the mechanic Jarek Yeager, who disagreed with her opinions on the First Order's practices and compared them to the Empire. However, Ryvora felt that her grandfather was an example of an Imperial employee with good intentions, which meant that the First Order's aims could also be beneficial. When Yeager began to reply pointing out the Empire's flaws, she scoffed and left.[2]

Behind the scenes

"Tam didn't really understand. […] Her grandfather, her parents, you know, that were employed by the Empire wasn't a good thing, but she didn't quite understand it. She wasn't alive during that time."

The Imperial factory was first mentioned in "The New Trooper,"[2] the sixteenth episode of the first season of the Star Wars Resistance animated television series,[6] which premiered on November 4, 2018.[7] Resistance executive producer Justin Ridge[2] felt that having Ryvora discuss her grandfather's past[3] as an Imperial factory worker[2] on the show was important[3] as it explained why she did not view the Empire as inherently evil.[8]

Another of the show's executive producers, Brandon Auman, revealed that Ryvora's grandfather's work for the Empire had taken place before she was born. The producer further indicated that Ryvora did not truly understand that the factory occupation that had provided for her family in the past was, in part, involved in producing weapons of war.[1]
