"I know the stories. My grandfather worked at an Imperial factory. Put food on the table when he couldn't find work anywhere else. Did that make him evil?"

The grandfather of the human mechanic Tamara Ryvora was a male individual who worked in an Imperial weapons factory. In 34 ABY, Ryvora told the Resistance spy Kazuda Xiono and the mechanic Jarek Yeager about her grandfather's occupation and how it had assisted her family.

"Oh, I understand. I understand that you're taking Kaz's side. Again."

A male individual who eventually became the grandfather of the human mechanic Tamara Ryvora lived during the Imperial Era. During this time, he worked in a factory of the Galactic Empire. Though he searched elsewhere for work, laboring in[1] the weapons factory[2] proved to be the only way to feed his family.[1] At some point after he had stopped working there,[2] Ryvora was informed of[1] her[3] grandfather's Imperial employment and how it had assisted her family.[1]

While aboard the supertanker fuel depot Colossus[1] in 34 ABY,[4] Ryvora felt comforted[1] by the arrival of the Empire's successor state,[5] the First Order, and its stormtrooper presence because they reminded the mechanic of her grandfather's past. She discussed the First Order's arrival on the Colossus with Resistance spy Kazuda Xiono and mechanic Jarek Yeager, both of whom felt that the loss of autonomy resulting from the outsiders' control was reminiscent of Imperial tyranny. Ryvora disagreed, informing the pair of her grandfather's former employment and surmising that not everyone working for the Empire had harbored evil intent. Though Yeager attempted to explain that Imperials had exploited vulnerable individuals, she scoffed and left.[1]

Personality and traits

After unsuccessfully searching for work elsewhere, the grandfather acquiesced to working in an Imperial weapons factory in order to keep his family fed.[1]

Behind the scenes

"Tam's background—her grandfather worked for the Empire—means that she doesn't view the Empire as bad."
―Justin Ridge[6]

Tamara Ryvora's grandfather was first mentioned in "The New Trooper,"[1] the sixteenth episode of the first season of the Star Wars Resistance animated television series,[7] which premiered on November 4, 2018.[8] Resistance executive producer Justin Ridge[1] felt that having Ryvora discuss her grandfather's past on the show was important,[3] as it explained why she did not view the Empire as inherently evil.[6]

Another of the show's executive producers, Brandon Auman, noted the significance of Ryvora being too young to truly understand the Empire's evils as she had not been alive during its reign. Instead, Auman felt that she only comprehended that good people had been able to earn a living and support their families by working for Imperials, without also realizing that the work done in the Empire's factories—such as the one that employed her grandfather—often produced weapons of war.[2]
