This EG-6 power droid[2] was found by Jawas on Tatooine and held inside a sandcrawler where it encountered C-3PO and R2-D2 just prior to the Battle of Yavin.[5]
History
The droid's memory was enhanced beyond that of a standard power droid and it became more useful as a diagnostics system analyzer than an energizer. It spent most of its existence on a Tatooine moisture farm and became adept at analyzing farm and agricultural equipment.[4]
Some time prior to the Battle of Yavin, the droid's farm was raided by Tusken Raiders who killed its owners. The power droid was then salvaged by Jawas and brought on board their sandcrawler, where it eventually encountered C-3PO and R2-D2. The droid's enhanced programming led it to be friendly and able to give technical advice. Having had its identification numbers removed, the droid had no name but was content to know he was more advanced than his peers.[4]
Behind the scenes
This droid first appeared briefly inside the Jawa's sandcrawler in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.[5] Kenner released a "Power Droid" action figure in 1978 with this droid's photo on the packaging,[6] but its design and coloring more closely resemble another droid seen in the Lars homestead in the film.[5] The dark lighting in the movie scene makes it difficult to determine the droid's actual color; a Classic Star Wars children's book and one Hasbro action figure gave the droid a beige color[7][8] while another figure had a darker brown color.[9] Another figure in 2020 also featured this power droid's photo but more resembled the Lars' droid.[10]
Star Wars: Behind the Magic and The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia state that the power droid that C-3PO and R2-D2 found in the Jawa sandcrawler in A New Hope was an EG-6.[2][11] However, this droid emits the "gonk" sound,[5] which is a feature of the GNK power droid.
