"Ah, well. If I must surrender, then might as well go out with a bang."
―The Cosian, to Ebbe Casset and C-06N after being detained[1]

A Cosian served as a mechanic for the Nihil marauder group during the High Republic Era. In 228 BBY, the Cosian labored for the Nihil at a lommite processing plant on the planet Eriadu, where he repaired scav droids for the organization while they were in the middle of a battle. As he toiled, the Republic Defense Coalition (RDC) member Ebbe Casset and the protocol droid C-06N stumbled upon him after Casset pinpointed the plant as being a hub for the scav droids.

As the Cosian stared them down in shock and surrendered, Casset informed him that the plant had been captured by the RDC and additional troops would soon arrive. As Casset became diverted, the Cosian stated he would leave with "a bang" if he had to yield, which brought Casset to full attention in confusion at his words. She then observed the mechanic holding a transmitter and activating the droids around him while beaming as he shouted a phrase. Casset and C-06N hastily left the situation via a conveyer belt close by before leaving the processing plant, which was subsequently obliterated by her friends, the Adrens, inside their longbeam cruiser. Shortly thereafter, the battle on Eriadu was won by the Republic.

Biography

Toiling tirelessly

"I told you, I'm not to be disturbed if you want these droids ready in the next six hours—"
―The Cosian, to Ebbe Casset and C-06N, believing them to be guards[1]

During the High Republic Era, a Cosian served as part of the Nihil marauder organization as a mechanic[1] within the Occlusion Zone Occupying Force.[2] In 228 BBY,[3] as a battle erupted on the planet Eriadu between the Galactic Republic and the Nihil, the Cosian worked in a lommite processing plant on the planet, which was secretly refurbished to construct scav droids for the Nihil. At some point, the Cosian became frustrated at the guards outside the warehouse at which he worked when they disturbed him and directed them to leave if the droids were to be ready on time. Later on, the Republic Defense Coalition (RDC) member[1] Lieutenant[4] Ebbe Casset traversed to the plant in belief that the scav droids were being created there after checking a map of the battlefield and finding the plant to have had little to no bombardment, while picking up the protocol droid acquaintance C-06N along the way. After eliminating the two guards outside the warehouse and roaming several rooms in the[1] supposedly deserted[4] plant, Casset and C-06N stumbled upon the storeroom filled with dozens of scav droids being repaired.[1]

The Cosian, who was present in the room, worked on a row of droids with his wrench and trilled in the Cosian language until he heard Casset and C-06N enter the room. Believing them to be the guards again, he strolled beyond the droids and began to discourage them from entering until he noticed the two to be allied with the RDC. Surprised, the Cosian paused mid-sentence and froze in shock as he uttered the coalition's name followed with a chirp in his language. The Cosian then eagerly dropped his wrench, which was believed by Casset to be a sign of surrender, something the lieutenant favored over slaughter. Casset then announced to the Cosian that the droids had been seized by the RDC and reinforcements she had called upon earlier would arrive, even though she was unaware as to when they would. Casset proceeded to think about how arrogant the Nihil were, having only two guards and a droid on patrol with the Cosian relinquishing power after being observed sternly. She later continued to think about how the Cosian was likely being forced to labor for the Nihil.[1]

The big reveal

"Ride the Storm!"
―The Cosian, to Ebbe Casset and C-06N[1]

Casset subsequently looked beyond the Cosian to find[1] the longbeam cruiser[4] Aurie being piloted in the sky by what she presumed to be[1] her friends[4] Pikka and Joss Adren. While distracted and anxious at watching the Aurie be pursued by three Nihil starships, the Cosian made gestures while wielding a transmitter and spoke as his words were reverberated in the warehouse about how if he must succumb to authority, he would go "out with a bang." Perplexed how the sentence did not equal with his entreated motions, Casset glanced at the mechanic and found the transmitter in his hand beaming with the scav droids awakening around them. In terror, she watched as the Cosian spat a common phrase in the Nihil while smiling as the scav droids advanced on Casset and C-06N.[1]

Fearful of the approaching droids, the two promptly departed upon a conveyer belt nearby that led through the plant and ended in a smelter. As the heat of the machinery radiated off of Casset, who had previously attempted to call for assistance with her wrist comm, the lieutenant pondered whether the Cosian or the scav droids had triggered the mechanism, but was clueless as to who. Casset then acted quickly and successfully rescued herself and C-06N from the smelter before fleeing from the plant. The Adrens answered her call for help and destroyed the processing plant with the Aurie, with the Battle of Eriadu ending shortly thereafter with the Republic prevailing.[4]

Personality and traits

"RDC?"

While working on Eriadu, the Cosian wished not to be disturbed by outside intervention in order to have the droids assembled and ready on time. He twilled both while working and at the sight of RDC members, with the latter being either a cuss or a cry of relief. When he spotted Casset and C-06N, he froze in shock at the two's appearance, being astonished at their arrival and showing it through his eye movements. The Cosian keenly dropped his work tool in surrender to the duo, which was accepted by Casset. However, comprehending surrender, he decided to activate the scav droids around him to attack the RDC members, and snapped at the two in delight while the droids neared the two.[1]

Ebbe Casset thought the Nihil to be cocky and considered that and other factors to be the reason why the Cosian submitted all power from being examined sharply. She looked upon the Cosian as being forced into labor for the Nihil, empathizing with the mechanic and thinking he was being toiled to the bone. When the Cosian spoke of exiting "out with a bang," Casset was bewildered, as the expression uttered did not match with the signals shown by the mechanic.[1]

Skills and abilities

The Cosian served as a mechanic for the Nihil, being able to refurbish scav droids for the marauder group. He also spoke both Galactic Basic and Cosian on multiple occasions when confronted inside the processing plant.[1]

Equipment

The Cosian wore dirty work clothes and possessed a wrench on hand along with a transmitter.[1]

Behind the scenes

The Cosian first appeared in the short story "Tales from the Occlusion Zone: Out with a Bang," written by Lydia Kang as part of the Star Wars: The High Republic multimedia project's[1] Phase III.[5] The story was published in the 231st issue of the magazine Star Wars Insider as the eighth installment in the Tales from the Occlusion Zone serialized fiction[1] on April 29, 2025.[6]
