Transponder beacons or marker transponders[1] were devices used by scavengers to mark their findings so they could later come back for them. Each transponder beacon was set to a unique frequency.
Fahs Oxsor knew a pirate suffering from Bitter Winter who stabbed himself around forty times because he believed that the Galactic Empire has impregnated him with thousands of tiny transponder beacons.[2]
