"Third generation battle droid" was a classification used to define certain battle droids, including the Phase-III Dark Troopers created by the Imperial Department of Military Research.[1] Even though the failings of the Separatist Droid Army, particularly the limitations of the B1-series battle droid, during the Clone Wars had turned subsequent galactic powers away from creating armies made solely from battle droids,[4] the third-generation Dark Trooper was highly effective and created as a droid when it became clear that the final obstacle to the Dark trooper program was relying on human pilots.[3]
