The Squall was a location where those aspiring to be members of the Emperor's Royal Guard sparred against each other. During their final test, trainees fought each other to the death before Emperor Palpatine.[1]

Behind the scenes

The Squall was mentioned in the current Star Wars canon in "The Emperor's Red Guards," a short story published in the 2023 anthology From a Certain Point of View: Return of the Jedi and authored by Gloria Chao.[1] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, The Squall first appeared in the first issue of the Star Wars: Crimson Empire comic-book series, written by Mike Richardson and Randy Stradley, illustrated by Paul Gulacy, and published by Dark Horse Comics[2] on December 10, 1997.[3]
