The Righteous was a Venator-class Star Destroyer in the navy of the Galactic Republic. In 22 BBY, during the Clone Wars, The Righteous was destroyed by Separatist Alliance Admiral Trench. A Republic intelligence report containing information on the starship was accessed by Admiral Wullf Yularen, one of Trench's foes at the Battle of Christophsis later in that same year.

Description

A Venator-class Star Destroyer,[1] The Righteous served the naval forces of the Galactic Republic. The cruiser,[2] on its starboard side,[1] possessed at least three rear-mounted ion engines[4] and four dorsal DBY-827 heavy turbolaser turrets.[5] The Star Destroyer also had a dorsal superstructure accommodating two elevated bridges.[1]

History

In 22 BBY, during the Clone Wars,[6] The Righteous was destroyed by Admiral Trench of the Confederacy of Independent Systems.[2] During the Battle of Christophsis[1] in that same year,[6] Trench led a naval blockade of the planet against Jedi General Anakin Skywalker and Admiral Wullf Yularen of the Republic, who were initially unaware of their opponent's identity.[1] While researching the markings on Trench's flagship Invincible, Yularen viewed an intelligence report aboard the Resolute concerning The Righteous.[2] The report included the Venator's name in Aurebesh, a circular red symbol superimposed on an illustration of The Righteous from a starboard perspective, and the opposing flagship's crest, which he recognized due to his prior service in the Battle of Malastare Narrows against Trench[1] that took place in 34 BBY.[7] Yularen's research led him to correctly believe that the Republic's adversary was Trench, whom Skywalker later defeated in battle.[1]

Behind the scenes

The Righteous was pictured on a computer screen in "Cat and Mouse,"[1] the sixteenth episode of the second season of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series, which was aired on March 26, 2010.[8] The ship's name was written in Aurebesh in the episode,[1] and the English translation was revealed in the corresponding episode guide on StarWars.com.[8] The vessel's illustration on the screen was an altered version of a sketch of the Resolute for "Storm Over Ryloth," the nineteenth episode of the first season of the same television series; the sketch was featured in that episode's own guide.[9]

  6. 6.0 6.1 6.2 Ultimate Star Wars states that Venator-class Star Destroyers were first deployed during the Clone Wars, which started in 22 BBY, according to Star Wars: Galactic Atlas. "Cat and Mouse" depicts Wullf Yularen viewing a file of The Righteous, a Venator, during the Battle of Christophsis, which occurred in 22 BBY, according to Star Wars: Timelines. The corresponding episode guide states that Yularen's files depicted starships destroyed by Trench, including The Righteous. Therefore, The Righteous was destroyed during the war, and prior to or in the same period of time as the Battle of Christophsis; this information isolates the year of its destruction to 22 BBY.
