The Needles

The Needles was an area in the Jundland Wastes region of the desert planet Tatooine.^[1] The nomadic Tusken Raiders native to Tatooine would concentrate into semi-permanent camps in the Needles during the planet's stormy season and the hottest times of year, waiting there until a change in the weather would allow them to resume their travels.^[2] Due to the Tuskens' generally hostile nature, the Needles was avoided by outsiders, who considered it frightening.^[1]

Behind the scenes

In the current Star Wars canon, the Needles was first mentioned in the "Helmets" section of the twenty-fifth issue of the French release of the Star Wars Helmet Collection magazine series, which was published by De Agostini^[2] on July 29, 2015^[3] and written by Iain Lowson.^[4] The area originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it was first mentioned in the 1995 reference book The Illustrated Star Wars Universe, which was written by Kevin J. Anderson.^[5] The Needles then appeared for the first time in the ninth issue of the Star Wars: Republic series of comic books, which was written by Timothy Truman, illustrated by Rod Pereira, and published by Dark Horse Comics^[6] on August 25, 1999.^[7]
