The Galaxy Britain Built is a BBC documentary primarily on the making and impact of the 1977 original trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, with a particular focus on the British talent behind Star Wars. Presented by David Whiteley, directed by Matt Wildash, and executive produced by Diana Hare, the documentary was initially a 60-minute-production subtitled Droids, Darth Vader And Lightsabers and was broadcast on BBC Four on December 21, 2017.[1] An extended 90-minute-production premiered on BBC Four on December 16, 2019, subtitled The British Force Behind Star Wars.[2] The BBC crew also produced the 2019 documentary Toy Empire: The British Force Behind Star Wars Toys.[3]

The Galaxy Britain Built features exclusive interviews at Elstree Studios with several members of the A New Hope production crew—producer Gary Kurtz, 20th Century Fox executive Peter Beale, production supervisor Robert Watts, continuity supervisor Ann Skinner, costume designer John Mollo, art director Leslie Dilley, set decorator Roger Christian, makeup artist Nick Maley, and the London Symphony Orchestra's Robert Bourton and Denis Wick. The documentary also touches on the making of the 1980 original trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back, and the 2016 anthology film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, including interviews with Rogue One's director Gareth Edwards and editor Col Goudie. David Whiteley also authored the accompanying book The Galaxy Britain Built: The British Talent Behind Star Wars.[4]
