"Our facility, and all of the mines of Tilnes, are in jeopardy because a certain other group has also chosen to establish a base of operations in within Tilnes. Unlike ourselves, however, they did not first enter into a legitimate business arrangement with the kind folk of Verga Mer Mining Company."
―Thurm Loogg, on the Thaereian military's establishment of a base on Tilnes[1]

During the latter years of the Galactic Republic, the Thaereian military, an armed force chartered to defend the Cularin system, operated a secret base on Tilnes, a moon Tilnes of the planet Cularin. Circa 31 BBY, a group of freelance agents ventured close to the base and were ambushed by Thaereian troops. With their presence on Tilnes discovered, the Thaereian military subsequently abandoned the base.

Description

"The fact that the piggies and the Thaereians were so close to the Smile really sits badly for me. I mean, it makes a lot of sense that they'd use that area as a cover, but it also tells me that they didn't care, and when you flaunt not caring around things like that, they come back to bite you."
―HB7, on the proximity of the Thaereian military and Metatheran Cartel bases on Tilnes to Kaernor's Smile[2]

The Thaereian military base on the moon Tilnes was situated deep beneath the surface of the world,[1] near to Kaernor's Smile,[2] a vast chasm with a mysterious reputation.[3] A Verga Mer Mining Company employee going by the moniker HB7 later speculated that the Thaereian outpost derived cover from its proximity to the Smile.[2] The base had capacity for capital ships to land.[1]

History

"After being assigned to a secret base beneath Tilnes—a base which, by his estimation, had no reason to be secret as it lay within the bounds of Cularin—and learning that the Thaereian forces had some sort of alliance with the Metatheran Cartel (whom Dal'Nay had long distrusted), he became convinced that drastic action might need to be taken."
―Yara Grugara, interviewing Osten Dal'Nay[4]

During the waning years of the Galactic Republic, the Thaereian military,[1] an armed force mandated by the Galactic Senate to defend the Cularin system,[5] operated a base on Tilnes, a moon of the planet Cularin. The Thaereians established the base without consent from the Verga Mer Mining Company,[1] a mining firm with rights to extract Tilnes' crystal deposits,[3] and the existence of the installation was kept secret. The Metatheran Cartel trading concern independently setup a base on Tilnes and considered the presence of the Thaereian facility to be disruptive to their own operation. Nevertheless, the Cartel took care not to interfere with the Thaereian base.[1]

The Thaereian military soldier[4] Corporal[1] Osten Dal'Nay came to be stationed at the Thaereian military Tilnes base.[4] Dal'Nay became increasingly disillusioned with the Thaereian military and believed there was no justification for the Thaereians to be concealing the existence of the Tilnes base since their operation there was within their remit to defend Cularin.[4] Circa 31 BBY,[6] the heroes of Cularin, a group of[1] Culariner[4] freelance agents investigating crystal mine collapses on Tilnes, ventured close to the Cartel[1] and Thaereian military secret bases.[4] After the agents encountered Cartel personnel beneath Tilnes, the Cartel representative Thurm Loogg tried to deflect the freelancers' attention away from the Cartel base by recommending that they investigate the Thaereian military base instead. Loogg further claimed that the Thaereian presence on Tilnes placed all of the moon's subterranean mines at risk from materials knocked out from orbit by capital ships landing at the Thaereian base.[1]

The heroes of Cularin pressed on towards the Thaereian military base[1] and troops at the outpost received an order from high up in the Thaereian military chain of command to neutralize the Culariners.[4] Learning that the Thaereians were staging an ambush and concerned that the Thaereian military were behaving detrimentally to the people of Cularin, Dal'Nay deserted and helped the heroes of Cularin to escape.[1] Following the discovery of their presence on Tilnes, the Thaereian military abandoned the base.[7]

Circa 21 BBY,[6] during the Clone Wars, in an internal memo sent to Verga Mer Mining Company managers the individual HB7 criticized the Thaereian military for setting up their base so close to Kaernor's Smile. HB7 believed this evidenced a disregard of local myths regarding the chasm. Later during the Clone Wars, the broadcaster Yara Grugara referenced the Thaereian base in a media interview with Osten Dal'Nay, in which she described the circumstances of Dal'Nay's desertion from the Thaereian installation.[4]

Behind the scenes

The Thaereian military base on Tilnes was first mentioned in Broken Orbits: Tilnes Rising, a 2001 roleplaying adventure written by Morrie Mullins. The adventure formed part of the Broken Orbits trilogy of the Living Force campaign,[1] an RPGA roleplaying series for Wizards of the Coast's Star Wars Roleplaying Game.[3] The base was later referenced in the 2003 Living Force adventure Metatheran Caution: Caaried Away[7] and in the Wizards.com Living Force tie-in articles Tilnes Falling and Osten Dal'Nay,[4] also all written by Morrie Mullins.[7][2][4]
