  • I'm not much of a wikicoder, so this is not really what it should look like, but hopefully you get the idea. —Silly Dan (talk) 03:26, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

Categorization

Is there any way we can get this to categorize a user by their time zone for easier finding of users by time? -- Riffsyphon1024 04:34, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

  • The only way to do that is to make a lot of templates instead of just one. That is what they do at wikipedia: Wikipedia:Userboxes/Time.–Sentry [Talk] 05:40, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
  • Nevermind, I made a test template that could work: User:Sentry/Template:user timezone. It is based on Silly Dan's userbox design which was, in turn, based on the one on my user page, which was based on one at Wikipedia ;) .
The only problem is that the template dynamically categorizes users based on the data they assign to the {{{zone}}} variable, which means that wookieepedians who make typos will be categorized based on that incorrect input...--Sentry [Talk] 06:39, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
    • Ya, forget that. Upon further testing, that idea didn't work. It seems that variables cannot be used to make new categories. Sooo, I did the next best thing. Now users will be added to a category named "Wookieepedians by timezone" where they will be sorted by timezone. That kinda sucks, but it is the best I can do. :( --Sentry [Talk] 07:00, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
  • Well thanks for trying anyway. There's got to be another way to do this though. If we make the categories by scratch, how do we name them? Category:Wookieepedians in the Central Time Zone, or Category:-6 (for minus 6 hours to Greenwich (UTC)) which doesnt make much sense alone but wouldn't be hard enough to screw up either. -- Riffsyphon1024 07:16, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
    • No prob. I wish it had worked though... That little trick would have saved us from having to make a bunch of extra templates. Anyway, I updated the timezone template with the few improvements that I managed to make to it and nominated my test user page for speedy deletion.--Sentry [Talk] 07:40, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
      • Which I have already deleted and now direct you to the new category I've made for our situation, to create categories and insert people in them manually. -- Riffsyphon1024 07:42, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
        • I came up with a solution. If the instructions that I added to the template page are too obscure and technical, feel free to check out the template call on my user page...--Sentry [Talk] 23:07, 7 July 2006 (UTC)
          • I see how you have the new variables, but how does that make the wiki understand what + is, since it won't take a plus sign in a category? -- Riffsyphon1024 05:12, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
            • Hmmm... I didn't realize that the plus sign was a problem. I tried out Numeric character references, but that didn't work. I'll test some things out and see if I can make it work. Otherwise, I will have to explicitly spell out the 'plus' like what you did for Category:UTC plus 7.--Sentry [Talk] 07:08, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
              • Well, it should work properly now.--Sentry [Talk] 07:38, 8 July 2006 (UTC)
