Dead?
How do we know Cass died? Although the infobox says he died, there's nothing in the main body that said he did. Is there another source that says he died? --Lewisr (talk) 13:08, July 26, 2017 (UTC)
- I think it came from the Vader comic, where Sheev says Tagge was the only officer he could use, implying all others at the meeting in ANH died. - Tommy-Macaroni

- The same issue arose on Talk: Hurst Romodi, where it was decided to leave it blank as its too speculative to say he died --Lewisr (talk) 14:37, July 26, 2017 (UTC)
- Fair enough, I'll look over other imperial pages and remove their deaths if they have no proper source. - Tommy-Macaroni

The Cass name was established in A New Hope's fourth draft
As seen here, the officer's name was apparently established in the fourth draft given to Harrison Ford, even prior to the novelization's release. https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-68097894?fbclid=IwAR2MHIU7cNIpkvzygQxQIlKcvvG1hj1pjOcQzcSNkMM6qkF37lb2trrGdDE. Gender
The article identifies Siward as male, citing A New Hope. Where in A New Hope are they confirmed as male, though? They may just as well be non-binary. — Mustafar29 ✉ 22:40, 18 November 2024 (UTC)
- In general, Wookieepedia articles are not always guaranteed to be correct. With this entry, indeed, nothing in that film confirms it. I haven't checked other canon media listed as including Cass (and also note that not all the entries on this site are complete with lists of appearances or sources) to confirm if anything else mentions anything about gender. - Also to note, this was likely from before we shifted away from judging based on appearance in media, so would be worth checking the various listed sources/appearances to see if one confirms anything for gender Lewisr (talk) 03:06, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- Am I free to change their pronouns for gender-neutral they/their(s)/them if I look through the sources and find no info on his gender or pronouns? — Mustafar29 ✉ 15:12, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- For the most part, yes; though the parts referring to the character's depiction in Legends would use he/him if Legends sources do, so that'd need to be individually checked. The IU part for canon, though, could be swapped after each has been checked.—spookywillowwtalk 17:13, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- I don't think that is how it should work. I believe that we should adhere to gender-neutral pronouns (they/their(s)/them) until someone cites a source that will state otherwise. By retaining he/his/him (let alone the "male" label in the infobox, which—if not removed altogether—should at worst get a {{Fact}} in place of the inaccurate reference), we impose our own bias on the character, based merely on their physical appearance. This doesn't seem to be in line with Wookieepedia's policy. Naturally, I'm not going to act on my own—hence the discussion—plus I'm not in a position to look through the cited sources aside from Servants of the Empire: The Secret Academy, which I happen to possess. But it doesn't mention their pronouns, much less their gender. — Mustafar29 ✉ 21:49, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- It's better to check all the sources instead of going through the effort of making all the changes only to have to undo them. OOM 224 (he/him/they) 21:53, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
- Just to point out, that's not "bias"—that's saying you're free to remove them for canon, and in all canon parts of the article, if you don't find them, which is the question you asked. But also, if the Legends continuity specifies them, after its checked, even when the new canon doesn't, then the Behind the scenes section parts discussing the Legends iteration of the character still use what is canonical with respect to Legends. Every editor is welcome to check sources and make revisions based on that research, and there are ongoing efforts to do the pronoun/gender update sitewide, but there's also well over 50,000 character articles—so, no, we do not generally remove the information until after it's been checked because it's unreasonable to assume we'd be able to update these all instantly. This is also the same practice for any wide change that affects thousands of articles.—spookywillowwtalk 21:55, 19 November 2024 (UTC)
