Non-binary reversions

I see some back-and-forth edit reversions over whether or not Kho Phon Farrus has been established to be non-binary - the only sources I can find for it are a single use of "their" (by a character who doesn't know them) in the Aphra #17 sample, and fan account retweets on the author's Twitter page calling Farrus NB. It seems to me that the intention is for Farrus to be non-binary, but without the rest of the issue's context or a mention of it by the author, it's hard to be certain. Should the information be held off pending confirmation? Was there a more direct reference to Farrus being NB that I've missed? RogueWhistler (talk) 18:28, 24 December 2021 (UTC)

  • I suppose that we can't be completey certain based on the comic, but the author's retweets seem like good confirmation (though they could probably use a mention in the BTS). VergenceScatter (talk) 23:30, 24 December 2021 (UTC)
    • Alyssa has tweeted about it. Nothing in the preview gives that indication, especially because Sana doesn't know the character, though I'm sure the final comic would likely confirm it IU Lewisr (talk) 23:44, 24 December 2021 (UTC)
      • even alyssas tweet isn't direct confirmation. as long as it's as vague as it is now, that shouldn't be featured in the article CharlotteSmoothie (talk) 00:57, 26 December 2021 (UTC)
        • Alyssa has also tweeted here indicating this story arc would introduce a new non-binary character and here to a fellow non-binary author reacting to the preview, with Alyssa likewise referring to the character with singular they pronouns. That said, the issue will release on January 5, so it's not a long wait to be able to definitively cite to the issue itself and stop the back-and-forth. • the usage of "they" doesn't mean automatically that they are non-binary, pronouns and gender aren't linked 100% to each other. ypu can use they and be male/female, and you can be non-binary and use she or he. it's more complex then most people here seem to think CharlotteSmoothie (talk) 12:58, 26 December 2021 (UTC)
            • Although pronouns aren't indicative of gender in the real world and the real world is more complex, pronouns are used simplistically in Star Wars to indicate the gender of characters in the pattern of he/him = male, she/her = female, they/them = non-binary. Multiple characters have they, them as their pronouns, and the creators of some of these characters explicitly identified the intended gender as non-binary when that set of pronouns is given. In Star Wars, the singular "they" has sometimes been used when the gender is unknown, so we further evaluate context to see if that's the case or if it's contextually indicating gender. Thus far, Eleodie Maracavanya is the only character to use a neopronoun (zhe, zher); an Unidentified Sabetue is specified as genderless. Perhaps someday we'll see another character with neopronouns or a more complex use of pronouns that we've seen thus far. I hope this explains the reasoning.
