The TIE/ag "Aggressor" Starfighter, also referred to simply as the TIE Aggressor or simply Aggressor, was a model of TIE series starfighter that was used by the Galactic Empire during the Imperial Era, including during the Galactic Civil War. As a fast attack and medium strike fighter, the TIE Aggressor was deployed by the Galactic Empire in multiple roles, including against smuggling, shipping, and surveillance.
Characteristics
The TIE/ag "Aggressor" Starfighter, also known as the TIE Aggressor or simply the Aggressor, was a model of TIE series starfighter, which was one of a line of advanced TIE variants. It was manufactured by Sienar Fleet Systems and cost 75,000 credits to produce. It was armed with forward-mounted medium laser cannons beneath the wings and a turret-mounted twin light laser cannon,[1] and could be outfitted with Barrage Rockets.[3] Similarly to other TIE line starships, the TIE Aggressor had no deflector shields, no hyperdrive, and no navigation computer. It was equipped with a twin ion engine and two solar collectors that were also wings attached to a central cockpit. Unlike the other models, however, was that the hull was elongated for a dedicated gunner that operated the turret, while the pilot focused on operating the starfighter.[1] It was more than 7.24 meters in length.[2]
Role
As a fast attack and medium strike fighter, the TIE Aggressor was used against shipping and smuggling, and also acted as a patrol craft[1] and used for surveillance.[4]
History
The TIE Aggressor was introduced into the Imperial Navy shortly prior to the Rebel Alliance victory against the Galactic Empire at the Battle of Yavin,[1] which occurred in 0 BBY,[5] and was developed in response to an increase in Rebel Alliance-backed smuggling and shipping. TIE Aggressors were used on[1] the Outer Rim Imperial planet[6] Scarif as an additional means of surveillance.[4] It saw action throughout the Galactic Civil War, and the starfighter was used by an elite squadron that was particularly active in a sector of the galaxy with Rebel Alliance activity, destroying several Alliance squadrons.[1] At one point, a TIE Aggressor flew near another starship and fired a Barrage Rocket,[3] while in another instance an Imperial installation suddenly changed its patrol craft from TIE/ln starfighters to TIE Aggressors.[1]
Behind the scenes
The TIE/ag Aggressor Starfighter debuted in canon with its entry in Fantasy Flight Games' 2020 roleplaying game sourcebook Starships and Speeders.[1] It originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity video game expansion pack Star Wars Galaxies: Jump to Lightspeed,[7] which was released in 2004.[8]
