In 3649 BBY,[2] the Galactic Senate of the Republic convened to elect a Supreme Chancellor as leader of the democratic government[3] for a four-year term.[5] Four years earlier,[2] the Senate had unanimously elected Senator Dorian Janarus of Coruscant as the Supreme Chancellor.[3] In 3649 BBY, at the expiration of the four-year term, the Senate decided he should remain in the position.[2] The election was a small affair because the candidates feared assassination by the Sith Empire.[5]

  2. 2.0 2.1 2.2 2.3 Star Wars: The Old Republic Encyclopedia states that Janarus was elected in the immediate aftermath of the Treaty of Coruscant, placed in the year 3653 BBY by The Old Republic: Deceived. Janarus was the incumbent Supreme Chancellor in Star Wars: The Old Republic, which has early events in the Jedi Knight class that must occur in 3643 BBY due to statements in various tie-in materials. The in-game Codex's "Republic Government" entry stated that "in recent years" there were campaigns for the position of Supreme Chancellor. Since portions of the game took place ten years after Janarus was elected, there must have been at least two election cycles in the intervening years.
