Steerage overseers were officials led by Constable Marcel Shradeer who were authorised to intervene whenever problems arose between passengers on board the AA-9 Freighter-Liner Jendirian Valley. The freighter was populated by several of the overseers, who carried stun batons and were able to force troublesome passengers to disembark whenever the starship next landed. These strict measures allowed all passengers traveling on the Jendirian Valley to travel in relative peace and tranquillity.[1]

A steerage overseer first appeared in the 2002 prequel trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones.[2] In the current Star Wars canon the term was first used in the "Starship Fact File" department of the 2015 magazine Star Wars: Build the Millennium Falcon 50,[1] which was written by Tim Veekhoven.[3] It originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it was first used in the 2002 reference book Star Wars: Attack of the Clones: The Visual Dictionary, which was written by David West Reynolds.[4]
