Star Wars: Republic Commando: Order 66 is a non-canonical sequel video game of Star Wars: Republic Commando, exclusively available on mobile phones.

Plot summary

With the defeat of Count Dooku, the CIS is left weakened and Clone Commando squads are sent on missions around the galaxy to assist in the war effort.

Cato Neimoidia

On Cato Neimoidia a squad of commandos is deployed to apprehend the CIS leadership. However, as they make their way through the Separatist base, Order 66 is given and the squad is assigned a new objective: eliminate Jedi Master Plo Koon, who was leading the Republic's invasion of the planet, but is now trying to escape by starfighter.

Mygeeto

On Mygeeto the GAR is fighting to take over the planet and thus weaken the Banking Clan. The commandos are ordered to eliminate General Ki-Adi-Mundi, who was leading the Republic forces on this planet.

Utapau

On Utapau the commandos are assisting the Republic invasion force in order to apprehend General Grievous and defeat his droid army. Fighting through the resistance, the commandos are ordered to eliminate General Obi-Wan Kenobi, who has apparently been cornered. While the commandos were seemingly successful, Kenobi's death is left unconfirmed. Regardless, Grievous was defeated and the planet was captured.

Kashyyyk

On Kashyyyk the commandos are sent in to help prevent the planet from being captured by the Separatists, as it is an important navigation route in the Southwest Quadrant[sic]. After fighting through the invaders, the commandos are ordered to locate and eliminate Jedi Masters Luminara Unduli and Yoda. During the battle, they successfully take out Unduli, but Yoda manages to escape, and is believed to have fled the planet.

Coruscant

There has been a Jedi rebellion against the Republic. Chancellor Palpatine has issued orders that a squad of commandos accompany the newly-anointed Darth Vader and the 501st Legion in their assault on the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. Fighting through the defenders, the commandos are assigned to eliminate the Jedi combat trainer Cin Drallig, who is leading the defense effort, beating back Vader's forces. After Drallig's defeat, the remaining defenders are dealt with and the Jedi rebellion is squelched.

Gameplay

The game is a vertical-scrolling shooter, where the player controls a squad of three units. These are locked in one of several selectable squad-formations, and must be navigated through the maps, eliminating enemies and avoiding obstacles. There are five levels in total, each on a different planet, and divided into three sub-levels, or maps. Upon reaching the third map, the player receives new orders, and a battle against a "boss" character - a Jedi Master - takes place. Each boss battle plays out a bit differently:

  • Plo Koon pilots his starfighter and acts as a mobile turret. The player has to shoot the starfighter all the while avoiding incoming blaster fire;
  • Ki-Adi-Mundi uses his lightsaber to deflect the player's attacks and can only be hurt when he throws his lightsaber;
  • Obi-Wan Kenobi uses Force Telekenisis to throw rocks at the player from a distance, and his lightsaber to attack at close range;
  • Yoda and Luminara Unduli attack the player with their lightsabers, Yoda moves around the map vertically, whereas Luminara moves horizontally;
  • Cin Drallig is assisted by three respawning Jedi and is highly mobile, attacking with his lightsaber up close.

Before each level the player is given a choice of six characters, of which they can select three for their squad, with only two characters being unlocked from the beginning. After beating a level, the player unlocks a new character. Each unlockable character comes with a unique ability. Additionally, as the player's squad progresses through the maps, they can pick up various items that might assist them in battle.

Notes and references

The game is set in the third act of Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, when Order 66 is issued to the Grand Army of the Republic. While the game features three out of four Delta Squad members, it would have been impossible for Delta Squad to actually participate in every mission as depicted in the game, as the events of these missions are taking place concurrently in the film. As such, it is likely that the playable clone commandos are meant to be stand-ins for different commando squads that may have participated in these battles, or else the developers did not concern themselves with continuity, which is likely the case given that in the film, the Jedi in question were killed by file-and-folder clone troopers rather than commandos.

  • Additionally, if the playable commandos were indeed meant to be Delta Squad, there is a discrepancy. At the end of the first game the three survivors of Delta Squad are RC-1138 'Boss', RC-1140 'Fixer', and RC-1262 'Scorch', whereas RC-1207 'Sev' was declared 'missing in action'. However in this game Sev is a playable character whereas Scorch is absent.
