Republic Commando, alternatively titled the Republic Commando series and the Republic Commando novels, was a multimedia project launched around the video game Star Wars: Republic Commando that was released in 2005. It primarily consisted of a series of novels by Karen Traviss focusing on members of the clone commandos of the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars. A second game, entitled Star Wars: Imperial Commando, was originally planned but was cancelled before it reached development. Similarly, Traviss's planned Imperial Commando series of novels was cancelled after its first entry, Imperial Commando: 501st.
Continuity
The Republic Commando videogame and tie-in novels built much upon a strong cultural connection among the clone commandos and Mandalorian warriors, something that was downplayed in the animated series with the establishment of Mandalorian pacifists who had turned their back on their martial heritage. The Clone Wars TV series also brought into question whether Jango Fett was ever truly a Mandalorian.[3]
However, there was still room for Mandalorian heritage among clones since the second-season episode Clone Cadets made it clear that bounty hunters were involved in the training of the clones. This was consistent with what was presented in the Republic Commando books: mercenaries with Mandalorian roots were involved in the training of the commandos specifically. The books, which focused on these commandos, were therefore steeped in Mandalorian lore, but these traditions weren’t necessarily applicable across the entirety of the clone ranks.[3]
