Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is an upcoming Star Wars action role-playing video game, set to be developed by Arcanaut Studios in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. The game acts as a "spiritual successor" to the 2003 Star Wars Legends video game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. As of the present, whether or not the game will fall into the current Star Wars canon or if it will be a Legends story has not been revealed.

Development

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is envisioned as a "spiritual successor" to the 2003 Legends game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, but is not a direct continuation and will instead "introduce new characters for an all-new story" set at the end of the Old Republic.[1] The development team will be led by Casey Hudson, who was the director for Knights of the Old Republic[1] and co-founded Arcanaut Studios in July 2025.[2] Fate of the Old Republic was first publicly announced with a teaser trailer during that year's Game Awards on December 11.[1] Ahead of that announcement, however, news of the game was leaked thanks to an insider who went by the screenname "Kurakasis," who first mentioned a major Star Wars game announcement was forthcoming on December 3 of that year[3] before revealing it was related to The Old Republic on December 6.[4] "Kurakasis" also confirmed on December 11,[5] shortly ahead of the final announcement,[1] the game was not the forthcoming Knights of the Old Republic remake.[5]

The Game Awards trailer depicted an individual equipped with a blue lightsaber landing on a terrestrial astronomical object before, in the company of a rifle-equipped individual and a droid, making their way into a crashed starship. Within the vessel, the trailer's protagonist encounters something that makes them activate their lightsaber.[6] The game is still in early stages of development[1] and will release for PC and consoles.[2] In response to rumors that the game will have a long development time, Hudson said that the game would release before 2030 at least, joking that he's "not getting any younger."[7] At the time of the game's announcement, whether or not it would fall into the current Star Wars canon or if it would be a new Legends story was not clear. Pablo Hidalgo of the Lucasfilm Story Group promised more information would come as time moved on.[8]
