The Speaker's staff

The Speaker's staff

The Speaker's staff was a long wooden staff wielded by the Vice Chair of the Galactic Republic Senate. It had crisscrossing carved lines running down its length, and was capped by a dull golden statuette[1] of Sistros Nevet,[2][3] one of the Four Sages of Dwartii.[4]

During the proclamation of the New Order—when Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine announced the transformation of the Republic into the First Galactic Empire—the staff was held by the current Vice Chair, a Chagrian named Mas Amedda.[5]

After he became Grand Vizier of the Galactic Empire, Amedda continued to wield a similar scepter.[6] When the Galactic Emperor held a briefing, Amedda would bang his staff on the floor as a sign that the meeting should commence.[2]

Behind the scenes

The Speaker's staff first appeared in the 2005 prequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith,[5] and was identified canonically in the 2016 reference book Star Wars Character Encyclopedia: Updated and Expanded, written by Pablo Hidalgo.[1]
