- «Because after you finish, we're going to go downstairs to the dojo and go a couple of rounds.»
«I see. Stick, or unarmed?» - ―Ziara and Thrawn
Soft-coat sticks were a type of combat stick used for training and sparring by cadets at the Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet's Taharim Academy on the Chiss Ascendancy planet Naporar.[1] Between 39 BBY and 37 BBY,[2] the cadets Mitth'raw'nuruodo, core name "Thrawn," and Irizi'ar'alani, core name "Ziara," sparred with soft-coat sticks at a dojo on the planet. Ziara noted that the soft-coat sticks had the same weight and balance as real combat sticks.[1]
Behind the scenes
Soft-coat sticks appeared in the 2020 novel Thrawn Ascendancy: Chaos Rising, the first installment of Timothy Zahn's Star Wars: The Ascendancy Trilogy.[1]

- ↑ Thrawn begins instruction at Taharim Academy around 39 BBY per the reasoning here. Thrawn Ascendancy: Lesser Evil establishes that he graduated from the academy in two years, around 37 BBY. As Ziara held the rank of senior cadet during Thrawn's tenure at the academy, it must have taken place between 39 and 37 BBY.
