"What about that damn personal cloaking trick? Did Sampa ever figure out how that thing worked?"
"Yeah, he got a look at the specs. It's a lot like a Sinrich optical dephaser, but it's got a totally different design. Looks like it's limited to three minutes on a charge, doesn't work on humans— needs a Noghri's double-layer skin conductivity or something— and doesn't cover any added stuff one it's been activated."
―Commander Kimmund and Sergeant Drav[4]

The Sinrich optical dephaser, simply known as the optical dephaser, was a small-scale cloaking device worn on the wearer's hand as a gauntlet. It could be used for various purposes, such as vehicular cloaking or invisible camouflage.

Description

"The personal cloaking device worn by the Grysks. Identical in function to that used by your assassin Rukh. I submit they are all Chiss design."
"Yes, though ironically such devices are of no use to our own people."
―Darth Vader and Thrawn[4]

The Sinrich optical dephaser,[1] known also as an optical dephaser,[5] was a small-scale[1] Chiss technology[4] cloaking device that enabled its wearer or other relevant object to turn invisible. It was used for various purposes, such as vehicular cloaking and also invisible camouflage for hunting and hand-to-hand combat.[1] The device's compact design made it possible for the optical dephaser to be worn as a gauntlet on the wearer's hand.[6]

Additionally, the cloaking device may get burned out when overused.[4] The optical dephaser itself was similar in function to the holographic disguise matrix, which was invented by the Snivvian bounty hunter Sinrich.[7] Despite being a Chiss technology, the device could not work on the Chiss species. There were also uniquely designed Sinrich optical dephaser, such as one worn by the Noghri assassin Rukh. His device would require Noghri's double-layer skin conductivity to activate and could only last up to three minutes in a single charge.[4]

History

«While I will not be revealing its origin at this juncture, I will disclose my optical dephaser has allowed me to pull off increasingly involved heists since obtaining it.»
―Glikkin[6]

In 2 BBY,[8] during the Imperial–Grysk conflict, the Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Vader noted that Rukh's cloaking device was Chiss technology. Grand Admiral Thrawn confirmed this, but noted that the device could not work on Chiss individuals themselves.[4] A year later,[9] shortly after the rescue of Hera Syndulla by the Spectres on the planet Lothal, Rukh used the Sinrich optical dephaser to fight against Spectres crew Sabine Wren and Garazeb Orrelios.[2] In 9 ABY,[10] the Kubaz Hunter Glikkin wore the cloaking device while competing at the sporting competition Hunters of the Outer Rim[3] on the planet Vespaara.[11]
