Kylo Ren knocked over a silica tree on Exegol's surface while walking toward the Sith Citadel.
A silica tree was a phenomenon that could be observed on the Unknown Regions planet Exegol, being formed by one of the planet's constant lightning strikes transforming the grit and sand on its surface into a branching, tumor-like formation of glass.[1] It shared its name with the material silica.[2]
In 35 ABY,[3] Supreme Leader Kylo Ren of the First Order arrived on Exegol in order to investigate a mysterious transmission from the supposedly-deceased Galactic Emperor Palpatine. Landing his TIE whisper starfighter on the planet's surface, Ren strode on foot toward Exegol's Sith Citadel. On his way there, Ren knocked over a small silica tree with his boot, causing him to briefly become concerned about his fighter—exposed on the open terrain to the risk of being hit by lightning—and to realize he had to get under cover fast.[1]
Behind the scenes
A silica tree appeared in Rae Carson's 2020 adult novelization of[1] the 2019 sequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker.[4] In the real world, fulgurite is a mineral-like natural formation created by the heat of a lightning strike fusing silica-containing sand into glass.[5]
