- "When enthusiasts stage recreations of the battle they tend to use replica great axes and swords known from the excavation of Taung burial sites on Roon. But by the time the Taungs reached Roon these were ritual objects—species capable of traveling through hyperspace don't still rely on edged weapons. Nor do you find such weapons still used by societies as sophisticated as the Zhell nations. It's as if you staged a recreation of the Siege of Ramsir with the Imperial Army limited to parade sabers."
- ―Hu Jibwe, "A LONG TIME AGO..."
The Siege of Ramsir was an engagement[2] that shared its name with the Outer Rim Territories' Ramsir system[3] and was fought at some point between 19 BBY[1] and 2 ABY. It saw the participation of the Imperial Army of the Galactic Empire.[2]
In 2 ABY, the Imperial Center Today contributor Eschul Shaywa published the article "A LONG TIME AGO...," which included comments by the military history scholar Hu Jibwe. The latter noted that it was likely that the Taungs and the Battalions of Zhell, two factions that had supposedly fought each other in a conflict two hundred thousand years prior, had used relatively sophisticated military technology such as aircraft and nuclear bombs, as opposed to the more primitive edged weapons commonly used in contemporary stage recreations of one of the conflict's battles. Jibwe further compared the contrast to a hypothetical recreation of the Siege of Ramsir in which the weaponry used by the Imperial Army was limited to parade sabers.[2]
Behind the scenes
The Siege of Ramsir was originally meant to be mentioned in the 2012 reference book The Essential Guide to Warfare by Jason Fry and Paul R. Urquhart; however, the section that would have mentioned the conflict was cut before the book's release. The information regarding the siege was later released in 2013 as part of Star Wars: The Essential Guide to Warfare Author's Cut, a series of articles published on the StarWars.com Blog by Fry and[2] Del Rey editor[4] Erich Schoeneweiss containing various cut content from the book.[2]
