- "Tatooine belongs to the Syndicate. As long as the spice keeps running, everyone will be left alone."
- ―Cad Bane
The Showdown in Freetown,[4] also known as the Shoot-out in Freetown,[5] occurred on the planet Tatooine[2] in 9 ABY[3] between the Marshal of Freetown Cobb Vanth and his deputy Scott and Cad Bane, a bounty hunter under the employment of the Pyke Syndicate.[2]
Prelude
Marshal Vanth ran the Pykes off from the Mos Pelgo territories.
During the New Republic Era in 9 ABY,[3] former bounty hunter Boba Fett killed the crime lord Bib Fortuna and usurped his position as Daimyo of Mos Espa. Fett began cultivating a gotra from the remnants of his predecessors', although his relatively inexperienced rule invited competition. One such group that sought to usurp Fett's claim on Tatooine was the Pyke Syndicate, who planned to extend their spice trade to the planet by force if necessary.[6]
One party that resisted the Pyke's encroachment on their territories was the citizenry of Freetown, led by Marshal Cobb Vanth. Anticipating a conflict breaking out between themselves and Fett's supporters, the Pykes hired the bounty hunter Cad Bane to act as an enforcer. Suspecting that Freetown would side with Fett in the upcoming conflict, the Pykes sent Bane to negotiate the town's neutrality.[2]
The showdown
Cobb Vanth noticed the silhouette of Cad Bane approaching Freetown on foot alone in the distance. Suspecting trouble, Vanth had the streets cleared so that he could face the bounty hunter alone. Bane entered the town and told Vanth that the Pykes were willing to offer the people of Freetown a substantial price if they swore to remain neutral in the upcoming conflict. Vanth's deputy Scott then emerged from a building and told Bane that Vanth wouldn't be accepting the offer.[2]
Bane issued a warning to the townsfolk before leaving.
Scott impulsively attempted to draw his blaster pistol, but Bane was faster and was able to shoot down both Vanth and Scott before they could fire. Vanth, who was shot a single time in the left shoulder, was incapacitated while Scott, who had been blasted repeatedly, was killed. Taanti, Jo and some of the townsfolk rushed to Vanth's aid while Bane issued a warning to the town not to interfere with the Syndicate's business. Afterward, he proceeded to calmly walk out of the town the same way he had came in.[2]
