"Shaara and the Sarlacc: The Skiff Guard's Tale" is a short story written by Dan'l Danehy-Oakes that was published in Tales from Jabba's Palace in December 1995 by Bantam Spectra. It is narrated in first person. In it, a skiff guard under the employment of Jabba the Hutt recalls a story about his sister Shaara encountering the Sarlacc, which he relays to Boba Fett. This happens as Luke Skywalker and Han Solo are being taken to the Great Pit of Carkoon to be eaten.
Plot summary
Assigned to escort Boba Fett to the Sarlacc pit, a skiff guard (whose name goes unmentioned) tells the story of his sister, Shaara, and how she narrowly avoided being eaten by the Sarlacc after she outran lecherous Imperials and crashed near the Pit of Carkoon.
However, his sister survived when she was miraculously thrown out of the pit. The skiff guard is not sure why the Sarlacc threw her back, but believes it might be that the Sarlacc will only eat those that deserve it. After more thought, the skiff guard realizes that if this is the case, then everyone should be Sarlacc food.
Continuity
In the film Return of the Jedi, Boba Fett was on the sail barge and not aboard a skiff at all, which raises the question how a skiff guard engaged him in so lengthy a storytelling session. The skiff guard was never named in the story and has not been named in any other sources.[2]
