Sel Maa was a humanoid female socialite from the planet Coruscant. During the last decades of the Galactic Republic, she gambled and spent time with the Human Daro Willits at the Outlander Club on her homeworld. In 22 BBY, she visited the club and flirted with Willits when the bounty hunter Zam Wesell ran into the club to hide from the Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker.
Biography
Sel Maa was a humanoid[2] female[1] socialite[4] native to[1] the planet[5] Coruscant. She was a gambling club patron during the last decades of the Galactic Republic at the Outlander Club,[1] a nightclub and gambling hall in the Uscru Entertainment District of Coruscant.[6] Maa spent a great deal of time with[1] the Human[3] Daro Willits when at the club.[1]
During a night[7] in 22 BBY,[8] she visited the club, drinking next to the bar and talking with two Rodians and a Pacithhip just before two Jedi, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker, entered searching for the bounty hunter Zam Wesell after her assassination attempt on Senator Padmé Amidala.[7] As the two walked in, she moved to a private alcove of the club[4] near the entrance[7] and held a willing audience with Willits,[3] flirting with him[3] and conversing with fellow patron Reha Logg.[9] Just moments after, she returned to the bar and stood with the aliens. Maa then went back to talking with Logg and Willits as Skywalker searched the club for Wesell.[7]
Personality and traits
Maa had blonde hair styled in a beehive hairdo[3] and brown eyes. Her skin color comprised of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple, but was light-colored around her face.[2] She had a sympathetic ear for Daro Willits,[3] flirting with him on the night she visited[4] in 22 BBY.[8]
Equipment
While in the club, Maa wore silver-colored heels and a sequined bodysuit. She also had sequins on her face, hair, and body.[4]
Behind the scenes
- "With high heels, a beehive hairdo and a mod bodysuit, Sel Maa is retro-futurism at its finest – the type of woman who should have been serving cocktails aboard a rocket jet in a 1960s sci-fi fantasy."
- ―Daniel Wallace
Sel Maa first appeared in Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones.
Sel Maa first appeared in the prequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones,[7] which was released on May 16, 2002.[10] The Outlander Club scenes including Maa, who was portrayed by an uncredited extra,[7] were shot at Fox Studios, Sydney on July 17, 2000.[11] Maa's rainbow body makeup was done by Makeup Supervisor Lesley Vanderwalt and her team of eight makeup artists.[12] Maa and other patrons of the Outlander Club were named by George Lucas and his film production company, Lucasfilm, during the production of the movie in anticipation for spin-off fiction opportunities and licensing.[13] The character was first revealed when the extra playing Sel Maa, in costume, introduced the twelfth episode of the Episode II behind-the-scenes video series on location.[14] The episode, "Jedi Beverage Break," was released on October 17, 2000.[15]
The character was first identified in an Episode II Depth Commentary available on StarWars.com that could be accessed through the DVD-ROM home release of Attack of the Clones[9] on November 12, 2002.[16] In the April 6, 2004,[17] article "Who's Who in the Outlander Club: It's Ladies' Night," published in the seventy-fifth issue of the Star Wars Insider magazine, author Daniel Wallace described Maa as the finest of retro-futurism. Wallace also writes that she is the type of woman who would have been serving cocktails aboard a rocket jet in a science fiction fantasy from the 1960s.[3]
