"The 204th loaned out a squadron to the Star Destroyer Sanction to defend against an anticipated terrorist raid."
Shakara Nuress, to Nath Tensent[1]

The Sanction was an Imperial-class Star Destroyer that served in the Galactic Empire's navy during the Galactic Civil War. The Star Destroyer took part in the defense of the Trenchenovu shipyards from an anticipated attack by a Rebel Alliance squadron, being loaned a TIE fighter squadron from the Empire's 204th Imperial Fighter Wing. After the 204th's TIEs ambushed the Alliance squadron, the Sanction jumped out of hyperspace to cut off the rebels' escape, the enemy squadron being nearly completely destroyed after.

Description

"We're flying BTL-A4 Y-wings. Better fighters than you'd think, but we weren't getting around that Impstar intact."
―Nath Tensent, to Yrica Quell[1]

The Sanction was an Imperial-class Star Destroyer equipped with hyperdrive systems.[1]

History

"Then—they bring in a Destroyer. Jumps out of lightspeed dead ahead, just waiting for the signal. They didn't only want to protect the docks; they were there to kill us."
―Nath Tensent, to Yrica Quell[1]

During the Galactic Civil War, the Star Destroyer Sanction served in the navy of the Galactic Empire.[1] Around seven months before the Battle of Endor in 4 ABY,[2] the Empire learned that a Rebel Alliance BTL-A4 Y-wing assault starfighter/bomber squadron was planning an attack on the Trenchenovu shipyards. To set a trap for the rebels, a squadron of twelve TIE fighters were loaned to the Sanction by the Empire's 204th Imperial Fighter Wing to defend Trenchenovu. The 204th's flagship,[1] the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer[3] Pursuer, had been planned to participate, but was forced to divert to a crisis elsewhere.[1]

When the rebel attack came, the 204th TIEs ambushed the rebel Y-wings and drove the bombers from the shipyards. The Sanction, meanwhile, was signalled to jump to the Trenchenovu shipyards through hyperspace. The Star Destroyer's arrival forced the rebel squadron to fly back through the shipyards. The 204th's TIE fighters were able to eliminate all but one of the Y-wings, flown by the squadron leader Nath Tensent, which escaped. Months later, Tensent recalled the battle, including the Sanction's arrival, to Yrica Quell, a pilot working for the New Republic's intelligence.[1]

Behind the scenes

The Sanction was mentioned in the 2019 novel Alphabet Squadron, written by Alexander Freed.[1]

  2. Alphabet Squadron establishes that Nath Tensent's squadron was nearly completely destroyed at the Trenchenovu shipyards six months before the Battle of Endor, which Star Wars: Galactic Atlas dates to 4 ABY. Tensent also mentioned in the novel that the Galactic Empire had been anticipating the attack on the Trenchenovu shipyards for a month, meaning the Empire learned of the attack around seven months before Endor.
