- "I'd say about twelve parsecs outside the Rishi Maze, toward the south."
- ―Dexter Jettster, on the location of the planet Kamino
The Rishi Maze, formally known as Companion Aurek, was a satellite dwarf galaxy in a close and decaying orbit above the galactic plane.
Astrography
Vast fields of gravitation, energy, and debris stretched out on all sides of the Rishi Maze. With large cosmic radiation fields that spanned the dwarf galaxy which shifted quickly.[2] Access between the main galactic disk and the Rishi Maze was the ancient hyperspace lane, the Zareca String.[3]
It was located twelve parsecs away from the planet Kamino,[4] located in Wild Space,[5] toward the galactic north.[4]
History
A view of the Rishi Maze from the surface of Rishi.
The satellite dwarf galaxy of the Rishi Maze derived its name from the planet Rishi.[3] However, the Rishi Maze formal name was "Companion Aurek", derived from Aurek, the first letter of the Aurebesh alphabet. Sometime prior to the Battle of Yavin, the Rebel Alliance established Firebase Alpha, an illegal energy-mining station, near a black hole inside the Rishi Maze. The smugglers Han Solo and Chewbacca were contracted to deliver supplies to the station.[2]
Behind the scenes
The Episode II DVD-ROM Exclusive Content states that "the cluster known as the Rishi Maze may be the bright object that Luke and Leia stare at the end of The Empire Strikes Back." However, Leland Chee confirmed on the StarWars.com Message Boards that the object seen in Episode V is the Star Wars galaxy,[6] despite this requiring the Rebel fleet to have traveled a very long distance from the galaxy. However, such a travel is possible according to the Outbound Flight Project led by Jedi Master Jorus C'baoth. The Rebel fleet could also be in the Rishi Maze during this scene, and thus able to view the main galaxy from outside.
The Rishi Maze was given the formal nomenclature of Companion Aurek in The Essential Atlas.
