Redirection crystals were small containers of pressurized Tibanna gas equipped with focusing crystals and blaster barrels. They could produce blaster bolts when struck, which had an equal power output to standard bolts, but their range was significantly reduced. Once struck, redirection crystals left very little behind. They were invented by the Galactic Empire's Imperial Security Bureau and manufactured in small numbers by the Imperial Department of Military Research. They cost 500 credits on the market and were favored by Imperial Intelligence agents who used them to obfuscate assassination scenes or frame others for crimes.[1]

Behind the scenes

Redirection crystals were first mentioned in the new Star Wars canon in Cyphers and Masks,[1] a 2018 sourcebook for the Star Wars: Age of Rebellion roleplaying game published by Fantasy Flight Games.[2] They originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where they first appeared in Specter of the Past, the first book in the Star Wars: The Hand of Thrawn Duology, written by Timothy Zahn and published by Bantam Spectra in 1997.[3]
