The "Red Shoulders" were B1-series battle droids under the command of General Grievous that had red-painted shoulders, special program sensors tuned up in their bodies, and could rotate their heads and waists 360 degrees.[2]

Behind the scenes

"Some of the Droids controlled by General Grievous have their shoulders painted in red and are called the "Red Shoulders" [sic] They have a special program sensor tuned up in their body and can make movements like this."
―Concept notes for the "Red Shoulders"[2]

The "Red Shoulders" were slated to appear in the canon animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars, though they were ultimately cut from the series.[2]

The "Red Shoulders" were most likely a nod to the Gilgamesh Space Force 10th Division 24th Melkian Strategic Armored Trooper Special Operations Corps Unit X-1, widely known as the "Red Shoulder Battalion" or "Red Shoulders" in the gritty 1983 military science fiction anime Armored Trooper VOTOMS. The Red Shoulders, who the main protagonist of the series was once apart of, were an elite unit of Armored Trooper soldiers with a reputation for deadly accuracy and complete disregard towards human life, civilian or otherwise. The members of Unit X-1 would paint the right shoulder armor of their Armored Trooper mecha red.
