R5-D8 was an R5-series astromech droid used by Rebel Alliance pilot Jek Tono Porkins. The R5 unit assisted in navigation, in-flight maintenance, and repairs. Porkins had used the droid since he was a part of the Tierfon Yellow Aces.[3] R5-D8 exploded together with Porkins's X-wing during the assault on the first Death Star.[1]
Behind the scenes
R5-D8 first appeared as a prop in the 1977 original trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.[1] It was first named in 2000 in a "Force File" included with a Jek Porkins action figure released by Hasbro as part of the Star Wars: Power of the Jedi line.
On July 13, 2012, R5-D8 appeared as an action figure in a Toys "R" Us–exclusive Yavin Pilot Pack released by Hasbro, and appeared in a LEGO Star Wars set that same year.
