- "Not to judge a droid by his plating, but one look at their paint jobs, and you know they're nothing but trouble!"
- ―R0-GR writes about R4-I9 and R2-Q5
R4-I9 was an R4 astromech droid[3] with masculine programming,[4] dark blue panelling and a black sensor who served the Galactic Empire. In the era of the Galactic Civil War, the astromech droid was deployed in the first Death Star, patrolling limited areas inside the battle station and performing computer maintenance or repair automatically.[5] The Resistance droid R0-GR wrote about R4-I9 and his fellow Imperial R-series droid R2-Q5 in his Droidography, where he claimed that based on the color of the two Imperial droid's panelling you could tell that they were trouble.[4]
Behind the scenes
In the new Star Wars canon, R4-I9 was first pictured on a card in the 2015 Topps Star Wars Force Attax The Force Awakens series of cards released in 2015.[6] The droid's name was then provided by the 2017 reference book Star Wars: The Visual Encyclopedia, which was written by Adam Bray, Tricia Barr and Cole Horton.[2] the droid originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it first appeared in the 1998 reference book Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary, which was written by David West Reynolds.[7]
