R2-D5 was a multiple use R2 unit used by the Rebel Alliance. It generally worked as an astromech droid, but could also be used as a labor droid. Its versatility made it an essential part of almost all technical aspects, from gathering resources like extracting and processing carbon, to repairing and building structures.

Models

There was a variety of models of R2-D5:

  • Carbon Collector:

The Carbon Collector was similar in design to other R2-series astromech droid models, but possessed a container for storing extracted carbon at its rear. It was frequently used to mine and deliver carbon crystals for processing.
  • Nova Carrier/Ore Collector: The Nova Carrier/Ore Collector's legs were extended outward to allow for a carrier at the front. It was used to carry extracted nova crystals and various ores.
  • Fisher: The Fisher model's head contained a large mechanical arm. It would use this arm to drop a net into a body of water, then reel up any marine lifeforms that the net ensnared.
  • Builder/Repairer:

The Builder/Repairer model was equipped with several tools used for construction and/or repair work.
  • Farmer model: The Farmer model had a front-facing sprinkler on top of its head, which it used to water plants for use for the Rebel Alliance as food supplies.
  • Hunter model: Similar to the Carbon Collector, the Hunter was equipped with a container. Unlike the other model, though, the Hunter used its container to store animals it had killed. It killed these animals using an attached weapon that ended the life of any prey it found.
  • Herder model: The Herder model had several arms in front of it to sway various fauna into following it.
