The R-88 Suppressor riot rifle was a medium-size blaster rifle manufactured by Merr-Sonn Munitions, Inc. during the time of the Galactic Republic, Galactic Empire, and New Republic and used to put down riots and insurrections on Coruscant. The R-88 was used by the Coruscant Security Force during the Old Republic, Empire, and New Republic days, but it was more popular with the Coruscant Guards, who used it frequently during the Imperial era.
Description
The R-88 was a nonlethal pacification device with a blast radius to scale with the effect of a stun grenade and the precise aiming of a blaster rifle. They were used to subdue rioters in a hurry. Two cylindrical tanks clipped under the weapon's barrel carried Brix-C stun fluid, which was fired in a compressed stream to diffuse in an aerosol rain over the targets. Either inhaling the aerosol cloud or absorbing it into the skin was enough to render a target unconscious, though breath masks and full-body coverings proved to be effective counter-measures against the R-88.[1]
These weapons were most notably used by the Coruscant Guard stormtroopers of the Galactic Empire.[2] However, the R-88 Suppressor was also used during the time of the Galactic Republic and the New Republic by the Coruscant Security Force to quell riots and urban unrest.[1]
