Qlaern Hirf

Qlaern Hirf was a Vratix member of the Ashern Circle and a verachen on the planet Thyferra. Hirf made contact with Rogue Squadron during the Krytos threat, alerting them to the location of deadly bacta aboard a space station around Yag'Dhul. After making its way to Coruscant aboard the Pulsar Skate, the verachen revealed to the New Republic that it had a cure for the Krytos virus, rylca. Being secretly taken to the Alderaan Biotics hydroponics facility on Borleias, Hirf was allowed to mass-produce the cure for the virus securely.[1]

As a Vratix, Hirf was neither male nor female, and due to the Vratix low-grade hive mind, the pronoun they/them was recommended. Referring to a Vratix as "he" or "she" was inappropriate;[2] after referring to Hirf as "he," Wedge Antilles was corrected by Mirax Terrik, who spoke of Hirf as "it."[1]

Behind the scenes

Despite both of Qlaern Hirf's appearances addressing the character's pronouns, with "he" being specifically ruled out,[1][2] A Guide to the Star Wars Universe, Third Edition, Revised and Expanded and The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia both use "he" in their entries for the character.[3][4]
