Pulsar tracking was a method used by the Trade Federation to locate starships. Pulsar tracking was fairly reliable for targeting large laser cannons on a starship. It obtained less accurate readings from a spinning ship, which a brave pilot would sometimes utilise dangerously to avoid detection.
Behind the scenes
In the revised second draft of Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, written and directed by George Lucas, Jinn advises Ric Olie to spin in order to counter the Trade Federation's pulsar tracking during their escape from Naboo.[1] That moment was included in the film's novelization by Terry Brooks.[2]
