- "We were supposed to go in, wipe out a small band of Rebels and recover some stolen Imperial plans on an encrypted holodisk. Before we knew it, we were nearly overrun by Rebel forces, with the holodisk nowhere to be found..."
- ―Unnamed 501st stormtrooper
A small Rebel outpost was located on Polis Massa, the main asteroid of the Polis Massa Asteroid Field, during the Galactic Civil War. The outpost was part of the larger Polis Massa Rebel base and was connected to other Rebel facilities on the asteroid via hidden underground tunnels. The Rebel outpost had a sophisticated communications array.[1]
History
Members of the 501st Legion fight soldiers of the Rebel Alliance in the Raid on Polis Massa.
In 0 BBY, just prior to the Battle of Yavin,[3] the facility was home to a Rebel cell which Imperial Intelligence believed the Death Star plans were transmitted to. Acting on this information, the Imperial 501st Stormtrooper Legion invaded the facility and terminated all Rebel troops in the area. Despite this success, the stormtroopers were not able to recover the plans and were soon dispatched to the Tatoo system by Darth Vader in order to capture Leia Organa's Tantive IV that was suspected to transport the plans.[2] As Imperial forces hastily departed, they destroyed most of the Rebel outpost, including its communications array. The Empire did not realize that this base was just a minor outpost and never discovered the main Rebel facilities on the asteroid. The destroyed outpost was later repurposed into a decoy base, which the Rebels hoped would convince the Empire that the Polis Massa Rebels were defeated. In case of a future attack, the Rebels planed to reveal on purpose other Rebel facilities connected to the abandoned outpost to lure the Imperials away from the major Rebel areas.[1]
