The Polis Massa Base was a Rebel Alliance base located in the Polis Massa Asteroid Field during the Galactic Civil War.

Description

The Polis Massa Base was located in the Polis Massa system of the Subterrel sector, in the Outer Rim Territories. The base encompassed a series of outposts, facilities, tunnels and operational areas spread throughout the Polis Massa Asteroid Field. All the areas of the base were in fact abandoned Polis Massan facilities, mostly ancient research sites, converted by the Rebels with the supports of the Polis Massans. The Polis Massa Rebel base was divided in three parts: the primary base located on Polis Massa itself (the largest asteroid of the Polis Massa Asteroid Field), the Polis Massan Research Base also located on the largest asteroid, and isolated outposts scattered on the main asteroid and throughout the asteroid field. All the Rebel facilities on the main asteroid, including the primary base, the Polis Massa Research Base and the scattered outposts were connected by hidden underground tunnels.[1]

The primary base was located in an area of abandoned archaeological digs, several miles away from the Wiyentaah crater. Converted and expanded by the Rebels, it was made of multiple buildings clustered together in three or four groups connected by tunnels. The second most important component of the Polis Massa Rebel base was the Polis Massan Research Base, in the Wiyentaah crater. This base was a civilian archeological research station inhabited by the Polis Massans who opened their facility to the Rebellion. The Rebellion had established their primary base several miles away from the research base to avoid to expose the Polis Massans unnecessarily at risk. The Rebels also limited their presence in the Polis Massan research base, although they made extensive use of its advanced medical center.[1]

Overall, the Polis Massa Base included barracks, command centers, communications arrays, landing moorings, medical facilities, shield and power generator, training areas, vehicle maintenance garages and two starfighter hangars. It was defended by laser turrets and deflector shields. The base was commanded by General Elora Silssusio and housed 375 personnel: 25 officers, 150 staff and 200 combat personnel, including pilots.[1] It was crewed by beings of different species, including Human troopers, Wookiee archers, and Bothan spies. They were also equipped with FX-series medical assistant droids.[2] The base also included six Polis Massa flitter shuttles, eight hovertanks[1] (such as AAC-1 speeder tanks),[2] 12 X-wing fighters (Kip Famas's 94th Fighter/Attack Squadron), 12 Y-wing fighters (Pashna Genko's 88th Attack Squadron), two transports and some light freighter supply ships.[1]

History

"We were supposed to go in, wipe out a small band of Rebels and recover some stolen Imperial plans on an encrypted holodisk. Before we knew it, we were nearly overrun by Rebel forces, with the holodisk nowhere to be found..."

A 501st stormtrooper attacks Rebel forces during the raid on Polis Massa.

In 0 BBY, just prior to the Battle of Yavin,[3] the Galactic Empire discovered a small Rebel outpost on Polis Massa.[1] The facility was home to a Rebel cell which Imperial Intelligence believed the Death Star plans were transmitted to. These plans had been beamed from the Death Star by the Alliance during a prison break. Acting on this information, the Imperial 501st Stormtrooper Legion raided the facility and terminated all Rebel activity in the area. However, the stormtroopers were not able to secure the plans and were soon dispatched to the Tatoo system by Darth Vader in order to capture the Tantive IV that was suspected to carry the plans.[2] As Imperial forces hastily departed, they destroyed most of the Rebel outpost. The Empire did not realize that this base was just a minor outpost and never discovered the main Rebel facilities on the asteroid. The destroyed outpost became a decoy intended to lure Imperial forces. In case of a future attack, the Rebels planed to reveal on purpose other Rebel facilities connected to the abandoned outpost to draw the Imperials away from the Polis Massa Research Base and major Rebel outposts.[1]
