"Marvelous, Dr. Aphra. On top of everything else I asked you to acquire, you were able to obtain this rare coral from Alderaan's Polar Sea. Virtually nonexistent since the planet's destruction."
―Ronen Tagge, to Chelli Lona Aphra[2]

The Polar Sea was a sea located on[2] the Core Worlds[3] planet Alderaan. A type of coral could be found in the sea that the House of Tagge scion Ronen Tagge stated was rare.[2] In 1 BBY,[1] Alderaan and its Polar Sea were destroyed[2] by the Galactic Empire's Death Star superweapon,[3] which left the coral virtually nonexistent.[2]

Between 1 BBY and 3 ABY,[4] Tagge hired the rogue archaeologist Doctor Chelli Lona Aphra to acquire a number of artifacts which he planned to destroy. While she obtained the artifacts for Tagge, Aphra also acquired some of the coral, which thrilled him, noting it had been virtually nonexistent due to Alderaan's destruction. After the archaeologist was paid by Tagge, she stole the artifacts back from him.[2] In 3 ABY,[4] Aphra informed her crew about the incident with the coral from Alderaan's Polar Sea after Tagge told the archaeologist's crewmate—Professor Eustacia Okka—to give Aphra his regards.[2]

Behind the scenes

In the current Star Wars canon, Alderaan's Polar Sea was mentioned in flashbacks in the second issue of the 2020 comic series Star Wars: Doctor Aphra. The issue was written by Alyssa Wong and published by Marvel Comics[2] on July 22, 2020.[5]

The polar sea originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where it was first mentioned in The Illustrated Star Wars Universe, a 1995 reference book written by Kevin J. Anderson.[6] The sea was first depicted in Coruscant and the Core Worlds, a 2003 sourcebook published by Wizards of the Coast for use in the Star Wars Roleplaying Game.[7]
