The Plague of Darkness was a plague utilized by the Wyrd, a coven of dark side Force witches,[1] in around 19 BBY[2] to target the ch'hala trees of the planet Cularin. The contagion was developed by the witches based on teachings shared with them by Len Markus, the leader of the Believers Sith cult, drawn from ancient Sith mutational practices. The witches attempted to use the plague to drive the World Tree Ch'hala of Cularin to the dark side of the Force under the witches' control and thereby enable them to dominate the world's ecology. However, the Jedi Master Lanius Qel-Bertuk sacrificed himself and merged his consciousness with the ch'hala to enable it to fight off the plague.[1]
