A pirate base located on the planet Tatooine served as the headquarters of the Sand slum pirates during the time of the Galactic Civil War.
Description
An Imperial banner on the wall of the base's interior
The pirate base was located east of the city of Mos Eisley on the planet Tatooine. Occupied by a band of criminals known as the Sand slum pirates and their pirate leader, the base consisted of several underground levels,[1] with its interior resembling the design of Imperial Tactical Centers.[2] Indeed, the interior of the base consisted of at least a couple banners emblazoned with the crest of the Galactic Empire, indicating that the base was once under the control of Imperial forces.[1]
History
- "Somewhere on this deserty planet, strife between ranchers and pirates rages on. Seek them out, choose the correct path, and the Mark of Honor shall be bestowed upon you."
- ―The hermit, to a spacer
The bottom-most level of the base consisted of a Krayt Dragon skull affixed on the wall.
Sometime following the Battle of Yavin in 0 BBY, the pirates harassed the farmers Roric and Helen Goldenfield who lived in the neighboring ranch.[1] In 1 ABY,[3] a spacer pinned down and attacked the pirate leader at the bottom-most level of the base. However, the spacer spared the pirate's life after he surrendered. For the spacer's part in diffusing tensions between the pirates and the local moisture farmers, the spacer was awarded with the Mark of Honor.[1]
Behind the scenes
The pirate base was a location in the 2003 video game Star Wars Galaxies, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game developed by Sony Online Entertainment and published by LucasArts,[1] prior to its closure on December 15, 2011.[4] The sand slum pirates and their base were added to the game as part of the revamped version of the "Hero of Tatooine" questline,[1] released with the "Publish 25," a.k.a. the "New Game Enhancements," on November 15, 2005.[5]
Players taking part in the "Honor" portion of the "Hero of Tatooine" had to fight the sand slum pirates in their base and defeat their leader.[1] This version of the quest was significantly easier than the original in which players had to find and defeat a generic "pirate leader" who spawned at random location across Tatooine.[6] However, upon release of the "Publish 25", several bugs affected the new pirate leader and it was impossible to compete the quest until the publication of the "Chapter 2.7" update, on September 6, 2006.[7]

- ↑ The opening crawl of Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided dates the game to after the events of Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, and additionally, Serji-X Arrogantus, who died in Star Wars (1977) 10—the events of which The New Essential Chronology dates to 0 ABY—appears in the game. Therefore, at least a portion of Star Wars Galaxies must be set in that year. Furthermore, in the game Ruwan Tokai references the destruction of the Death Star as having occurred one year earlier, and Strongholds of Resistance also places the events of Galaxies' Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" in 1 ABY. Lastly, while Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" features the Battle of Hoth—dated to 3 ABY by The New Essential Chronology—the developers have stated that the portrayal of that battle in the game is intentionally anachronistic. Therefore, the events of Star Wars Galaxies must span from 0 ABY to around 1 ABY.
