Genarius, the planet where Pappi worked on the fortress Conkesta

Pappi was a Human male who worked as a chef during the latter years of the Galactic Republic.[1] Around 31 BBY, by which time Pappi was in his late twenties,[2] he took a post as the head chef of Conkesta, an armored, floating fortress built by the Dark Jedi Karae Nalvas on the planet Genarius.[3] Pappi worked in the kitchen of the fortress, alongside two other chefs.[1]

A group of freelance operatives infiltrated Conkesta on a mission to destroy the installation and passed through the kitchen as they progressed through the fortress,[3] encountering Pappi and his two chef colleagues.[1]

The freelance agents released a computer virus into the Conkesta main computer that caused the station to plummet into the planetary core of Genarius[3] and Pappi fled the station shortly before its destruction. He found a new job overseeing the kitchen of the Burnout Cafetorium, the cafeteria of the space station Burnout in the Thaereian system and led a kitchen staff of over twenty individuals, who were staunchly loyal to him.[1]

Circa 21 BBY,[2] while at work on Burnout Pappi became annoyed after the Trandoshan Thaereian Intelligence officer Xirossk burst in and ran through his kitchen. Xirossk had stolen a key component from the same freelance agents that Pappi had previously encountered on Conkesta and the group entered the kitchen in pursuit of the Trandoshan. Pappi did not recognize the operatives from his previous run-in with them and angrily demanded an explanation for the agents' presence in his kitchen. In return for information on which way Xirossk had ran, the group assisted Pappi with enhancing the variety and volume of the food that he prepared and with treating his allergy to the seeds of the Bothan pepper tree. As the freelance agents departed, Pappi berated his kitchen subordinates for burning some food.[1]

Personality and traits

"Whose kitchen is this? Yours? I didn't think so. I'm a busy man."
―Pappi, to the freelance agents who entered his kitchen in pursuit of Xirossk[1]

A large man,[1] Pappi was an expert chef,[3] experienced in cooking with different methods and materials. He maintained tight control of the kitchens that he operated and did not tolerate "bantha-brushing" among his employees, a term that he applied to fooling around while at work. He was quick to anger and became red in the face when riled. He possessed an allergy to ground Bothan pepper tree seeds which caused him to develop a runny nose and almost sent him into convulsions. Due to the popularity of the pepper among the Burnout inhabitants he was forced to use it as an ingredient in his cooking and consequently was keen to find a solution to his ailment.[1]

Pappi did not embark on his career as a chef for financial gain and sought respect for his culinary achievements. However, he was poor at math and encountered practical challenges in preparing the volume and variety of food needed to cater to the people of Burnout; he often served mynock meat and noted that it did not satisfy some of his diners. He was angered when he had to abandon his kitchen on Conkesta and later irked when Xirossk ran through his kitchen on Burnout, and was further annoyed when the freelance agents pursuing Xirossk approached the chef seeking information on the direction in which the errant Trandoshan had fled.[1]

Equipment

During his tenure on Conkesta, Pappi wore a white kitchen uniform and a small paper hat,[3] and he donned similar garb while stationed on Burnout. He carried a vibro-cleaver cooking implement and when conversing with others in his kitchen on Burnout habitually tossed the cleaver into the air, then caught it.[1]

Behind the scenes

Pappi featured in RPGA's Living Force roleplaying game, a tie-in to the Star Wars Roleplaying Game and set within Star Wars Legends continuity. He appeared in the 2002 roleplaying adventure The Air Up Thaere by Morrie Mullins and Lee Pickler, the second instalment of the Looking In trilogy, in which he was identified as one of three[1] unnamed[3] chefs that appeared in the[1] 2001[3] Living Force adventure Into the Storm Clouds,[1] by Mullins and Jason Nichols,[3] retroactively establishing Into the Storm Clouds as Pappi's first appearance.[1]

In the Living Force campaign, the players roleplay as the group of individuals that infiltrate Conkesta and whom Pappi later encounters on Burnout.[1] In Into the Storm Clouds, it is possible for the player characters to pass through the kitchen of Conkesta as they progress through the fortress[3] and to encounter Pappi and his two colleagues.[1] It is also possible for one Conkesta's three chefs accompany an elite strike force of soldiers in attacking the player characters as they progress through the facility; it is however unclear whether this chef is Pappi.[3]

When the player characters encounter Pappi on Burnout when playing The Air Up Thaere, if they players previously interacted within him on Conkesta he does not recognize them. The players can negotiate with Pappi for information regarding the direction in which Xirossk had fled; Pappi refuses to assist the unless the players support him in treating his Bothan pepper allergy and devising strategies to improve the diversity and amount of food that he produced. In addressing these demands, it is possible for the players to then provide Pappi with an electronic cookbook detailing new recipes, to setup a computer program to help calculate quantities of ingredients to use in his cooking and to design a treatment for his allergy. It is also possible for the player characters to engage him in combat.[1]

  2. 2.0 2.1 The Living Force Campaign Guide states that the Living Force campaign is set one year after the Invasion of Naboo, an event that is dated to 32 BBY by The New Essential Chronology. Into the Storm Clouds can therefore be dated to circa 31 BBY. As the Living Force adventure Philology moved the campaign forward ten years to the time of the Clone Wars, Outward Bound is therefore dated to circa 21 BBY.
