"The only real place on the Pilgrim's Road is Old Meru's, a shack with a few tables and chairs and a coolth reservoir that went dry before I was born. The cool air's long gone, but there's still shade and a trough for happabores."
―Rey writes about Meru in her survival guide[1]

Old Meru's, also known as Meru's waystation, was a shack located along the Pilgrim's Road in the Goazon Badlands of the desert planet Jakku. It belonged to the cyborg Meru and acted as a shady stop for travelers with a water trough for happabores. The scavenger Rey witnessed Meru emerge from the shack with a large gun on one occasion and later included a sketch of Old Meru's in her survival guide. The artist Gammit Chond also included a sketch of Old Meru's on a map of Jakku.

Description

"Old Meru's is a stop along the Pilgrim's Road where shade and a water trough for happabores can be found."
―A note on Gammit Chond's map of Jakku, Galactic Atlas[2]
The location of Old Meru's is marked in the desert beside the Pilgrim's Road on a map of the deserts of Jakku.

Old Meru's was located on a border between dunes and salt flats in the Goazon Badlands.

Old Meru's,[1] also kown as Meru's waystation,[3] was a shack made up of brown tents located in the Goazon Badlands region of the desert planet Jakku. The tents had several yellow and brown flags on poles above them, a few tables and chairs, with some sat outside the tent flap entrance, and a water trough for the beasts of burden known as happabores. Old Meru's had at least four windows with roll-up covers, and it was equipped with a coolth reservoir that at one point provided cool air.[1]

It sat on the border between a region of salt flats around Niima Outpost and the dunes of the Starship Graveyard.[4] The route known as the Pilgrim's Road was a trail worn by happabores through the Badlands over many years as they trudged to the troughs at Old Meru's and Niima Outpost,[5] with the shack becoming the only significant stop on the road.[1] The waystation was located to the north of the Kelvin Ravine and the tunnels of a kesium mine in Cratertown ran to just beyond Old Meru's.[3]

History

"Don't mess with Meru—the last time someone made that mistake, she came out of her shack with the biggest gun I've ever seen. The sound of her clicking off the safety shut everyone up."
―Rey writes about Meru in her survival guide[1]

Old Meru's belonged to the cyborg Meru and was visited by travelers along the Pilgrim's Road for shade and water. The scavenger Rey claimed that the shack's coolth reservoir had dried up before[1] she[6] was born[1] in 15 ABY.[6] Rey visited Old Meru's on at least one occasion, copying down images of two of Meru's tattoos when no one was looking and witnessing someone mess with the shack's owner, resulting in the cyborg emerging from Old Meru's with the largest gun that the scavenger had ever seen. Everyone else at the shack then fell silent when Meru clicked off the safety.[1]

By 34 ABY,[7] Rey had written about Old Meru's and its owner in a survival guide she created, including a sketch of the shack.[1] The Ithorian artist Gammit Chond at one point created a map of Jakku that included Old Meru's that was later published in the Galactic Atlas by the Graf Archive at some point after 34 ABY[2] and was also included in the updated version of the book.[8] Between 34 ABY and 35 ABY[9] Leesa Chaffni—a worker at Dai's Cafe on Jakku—mentioned Old Meru's to the patron Naldri Zuvio while discussing the kesium mine with tunnels near the shack.[3]

Behind the scenes

Old Meru's was first mentioned in Rey's Survival Guide, a 2015 replica journal written by Jason Fry and illustrated by Andrew Barthelmes.[1]
